Hot smoked salmon at home??

Couldn’t bring myself to pay £4.50 for 2 tiny fillets of (delicious) hot smoked salmon for my salad today so got Essentials Salmon Pieces instead!

No idea what would be a good way to cook them for a salad - any suggestions?? I can just steam them obviously but wondered if anyone had any seasoning / marinading tips that work particularly well with a salad?? I’m a good cook but absolutely terrified of fish for some reason.

I often make a fish-based pasta salad - usually tinned tuna, sometimes hot smoked trout (which is already cooked, like tuna). I make a sauce of creme freche, olive oil, lemon juice and a blob of mild mustard or horseradish. Mix with cooked fusilli pasta, and whatever else is in the fridge - lettuce, spring onions, flat leaf parsley, watercress etc. Quantities however you like, you can go overboard on the salad and low on pasta.

If using raw salmon I'd just steam it first.

Im sure back in the past I successfully managed to smoke some fish, probably salmon, in a steamer, using dried tea. It was great.

Then I remember trying to do it again, gave myself a migraine and probably some sort of air poisoning in the house, it burned to buggary and I think I ruined a pan.

By the time you’ve faffed about with you should have just paid the £4.50. Whatever you do won’t taste the same!

Are they the smoked salmon pieces? If so just eat them as is, they don’t cook very well.

I’ve done hot smoked salmon in a foil-lined wok with tea and oak shavings. It creates a god awful amount of smoke and the amount of foil you use you might as well pay the £4.50. Delicious though.

You’ve all convinced me that plain steamed salmon is perfectly valid in this scenario!! Might push the boat out with a squirt of lemon and some parsley
