Food that a restaurant serves that's outside its specialist cuisine e.g. chips in an Indian restaurant, sushi in a Chinese buffet etc.

I love both of those.

Why ? Flavour is in fat.

Nothing wrong with red onions, unless they were originally white & the cook has cut their finger.

Super extensive menus freak me out. We have a local takeaway which has so many exotic and unusual meats / fish on the menu. Weird things that are imported and it just makes me suspicious . I always imagine one of those pantries that Gordon Ramsey goes in on kitchen nightmares, y’know with buckets of slimy chicken liquid and three year old lobsters. The ones where the camera man has to go outside to throw up because the smell is so bad 🤮. Limited menu please, freshly cooked food.

This! and loaded fries /cheesy chips. Chips should just be served with salt and vinegar :-)

Those deeply silly mini deep fryer baskets. If I spot those, I'm not staying to eat...

Words · 07/06/2025 19:05

Menus with photos of the dishes on them.

Implausibly lengthy menus, usually encased in grubby plastic sleeves

Anything described as loaded or dirty or cheeky

Anything served on a slate or a board ( meat and cheese selections excepted)

I agree, especially if accompanied by the main dish on anything other than a
china plate. Slates are nasty.

RaraRachael · 07/06/2025 19:07

Hate loaded fries - chips gone soggy as they're smothered in something.
Fat on any meat. I don't order bacon rolls as I don't like pulling all the fat off. I have asked for it to be well done but the message rarely gets to the cook.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 07/06/2025 19:10

"Menus with photos of the dishes on them."

Don't entirely agree. Can be very useful if the menu is either non-existent, or written in e.g. Cantonese or Urdu.

I love fat on meat as long as it is properly rendered. So tasty.

I hate those mini fryer baskets also. Glad the craze for drinking from jam jars appears to have stopped.

Not about food but any establishment with music played above a subdued level is intolerable for me these days.

"Well done" does not equate to "remove the flavoursome fat".

PauliesWalnuts · 07/06/2025 19:13

Any food on Manchester’s Christmas market. I’m looking at you, Yorkshire Pudding and roast dinner “Wrap”.

Words · 07/06/2025 19:14

@PauliesWalnuts Shock

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 07/06/2025 19:16

Any food on a buffet that is within reach of a child.

Gettingbysomehow · 07/06/2025 19:19

Anything with sweet chilli in it - yuck.

RaraRachael · 07/06/2025 19:23

@oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends by well done I mean the fat to be crispy. I can eat that.
It's white fat I can't stand- disgusting, not flavoursome 😄

Or so you can see how much food you're going to get. A starter could be anything from a couple of prawns or tiny brushettas to a plate that would be plenty for a lunch. Sometimes it's hard to tell from the description alone.

LardyCakeLover · 07/06/2025 21:19

Food that's served on a wooden board, slate, tile, etc. I just want it on a plate or in a bowl please.

I can't be doing with this shit either. I've started asking them to take it away and bring it back on a plate 😃

MaryTheTurtle · 07/06/2025 22:14

Lardons - just fat with a millimetre of meat same as ribs - yuck
Offal - no way
pork joint - watched Casualty and a woman had eaten a rank pigs ear and got a tapeworm from it

CarefulN0w · 07/06/2025 22:48

Meat in any kind of BBQ, Katsu or sweet-chilli sauce which means it’s been bought pre-prepared and chucked in the microwave.

BettyBobble · 10/06/2025 15:25

Mac and cheese vile but cauliflower cheese I like. Sweet chilli sauce is rank also. Also detest fat on bacon or any meat and I remove it after it's cooked. Katsu curry is my ultimate nightmare food. I truly detest it. Also not a fan of beige food except for proper chips and decent quality fish fingers.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 11/06/2025 09:11

Lardons, offal, fat, probably any bacon, definitely sausages or offal. Agree bbq type products, just horrible. I’m not keen on any takeaway food, although DH sometimes buys it for himself.
