Would you eat a salad after finding a fly in it?

A housefly - one of the black and shiny green ones was crawling around inside a Tupperware box of salad. Must have somehow got in there unnoticed. So gross.

I’m now in two minds - reluctant to throw away a largish amount fresh salad, but conscious that the fly may have been somewhere horrid. WWYD?!

Could you not wash it…? (Assuming only salad leaves).

otherwise I probably would eat it and just hope for the best 😂

Autumnalsky · 10/05/2025 17:41

The salad is fairly tightly packed so the fly has probably not come into contact with all of it. I’ve thrown away the bit that was by the fly!

I recently ate salad a moth had been residing in. I inspected it for loose moth bits and gave it a wash. It did make me feel a bit unpleasant mentally, but physically I survived the experience.

Reddelilah · 10/05/2025 17:43

If the fly was trapped inside the box with the salad, I’d definitely chuck it away!

Autumnalsky · 10/05/2025 17:44

Unfortunately it’s not just leaves - I may try washing it anyway! Good thought!

I'm not squeamish, but I'd throw that away.

Autumnalsky · 10/05/2025 17:45

Hilariously, mumset has flagged that the salad might be a “sensitive image” and has informed me that it’s “under review”. I wonder what on earth it thinks it is?!

Nah, I’d bin that I’m afraid. What if it had laid eggs?

Plus, I’m a child of the 70s, so that ‘What Happens When A Fly Lands On Your Food?’ advert still haunts me 🪲🤮🦶💩

Reddelilah · 10/05/2025 17:48

Flies carry nasty diseases…

Autumnalsky · 10/05/2025 17:48

Ew! Eggs! Thanks for the replies. I will throw it away.

No I wouldn't eat that after finding a live fly in it....some undressed leaves that could be washed yes.

Nothankyov · 10/05/2025 17:51

If I knew it was there no I couldn’t. They could leave eggs behind I thought when they die? Maybe that’s maggots. Either way no for me.

JulesJules · 10/05/2025 17:51

Nope. Flies lay eggs 😬

KruelladeVille23 · 10/05/2025 17:52

You should definitely not eat that. Those big black flies almost all come from dog sh*t. It would have been one thing if it had just been leaves but you can never decontaminate that salad.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 10/05/2025 17:54

No chance would I eat that.
It would find itself in the bin faster than you can say Raid Fly Killer.

AlmostSummer25 · 10/05/2025 17:56

Nope. No way.

🤢🤮

Ha me too! We had a really graphic poster in our school canteen in the 1990s

IF it land and shooed it off and could remover that it -possibly

if it was a fruit fly - possibly

MrsPlantagenet · 10/05/2025 18:02

I’m generally pretty blazé about food hygiene, but there’s no way I’d eat that.

marylou25 · 10/05/2025 18:04

I'm easygoing about food stuff but not a hope I'd eat that, not a fly of all things, dirty yokes I'm afraid.

ohyesido · 10/05/2025 18:04

Bin it, it might have laid eggs which you’re then ingesting.

It's because it's got cucumber in it....the food of Satan.

nannyl · 10/05/2025 18:08

I grow a lot of my own salad and fruit and veg

Often there are flys on or near it in the garden as i pick them. Or caterpillars or aphids or other stuff.

I give them a shake and sometimes a wash, but quite frankly flys have flown on around it all while it grows, so it wouldnt cross my mind to stress about it.

Flys / wasps / bees etc land on my apples, pears berries, while growing on the trees too

LilDeVille · 10/05/2025 18:09

They do that with every photo these days after horrendous photo was uploaded a few months ago.

Hayley1256 · 10/05/2025 18:27

No I'd bin it, those big flies tend to land on shit, bins etc. No way would I eat it

DollopOfFun · 10/05/2025 18:34

Absolutely not.

Aphids, caterpillars, meh. Flies, NOPE.
