Does anyone remember the name or publisher of these recipe books

I’m looking for some help I finding a copy of a recipe book I used in the 90s.

I cannot remember the name or the publisher.

From memory there was a series of the books all dedicated to one main ingredient. ie chicken dishes, beef dishes, vegetable dishes etc.

They were small, square and thin and sold in every garden centre. I think the chicken one was orange in colour.

The recipes themselves were really easy to follow it’s colour pictures.

I have googled every detail I can think of but just can’t find them.

Please does anyone else remember them?

Were they the Good Food recipe books? Looking online they possibly may be ( but it looks as if the chicken one is brown not orange )

Until you mentioned garden centres, I would have said "Sainsbury's".

Gobolino80 · 04/05/2025 08:52

Agree, I think they were published by Good Food

PlanetOtter · 04/05/2025 08:54

Australian Woman’s Weekly? They were available in the UK and that sort of format.

Was it the Delia Collection ?

Is it the ones by J Salmon Ltd? Rectanglular, but fit all the other criteria.

You’re looking for the ‘favourite’ series. I searched the most obscure one I could remember on Amazon (link below) this should lead you to the others. They’re all by different authors so that’s why you can’t find them that way. I have loads of them!

Link seems to be missing

Or perhaps not, they only have drawings in my versions!

The good food 101 X recipe series is a good shout. They did Delicious magazine and Hamlyn versions of that style too.

That's what I was going to say too.

Thanks for the replies I think it may be the good food ones. Not quite how I remember them but going to order the chicken one!! It’s just the one recipe I want and I will know straightaway if it’s the correct one. Appreciate the time everyone has given.

Please let us know if it's the right book (I love these threads) and also what recipe you wanted.

TIA 💐

Having seen the responses last night off I went down the recipe book rabbit hole again and I think it may be have been published by Hamlyn. So I am not sure it will be the correct book.

I am looking for a satay with peanut sauce recipe. I have tried many, many recipes since losing the book. None are as good as my (probably rose tinted) memory of this particular recipe!

I can’t imagine it’s an authentic recipe, given the generic chicken book it was in. However I do recall it was a very adventurous recipe for me with “lots” of ingredients. I was in my late teens and not from a very foody family. Those books started my cooking journey.

It is the peanut sauce in particular I would love to replicate.

Well fingers crossed and if it isn't the right one hopefully someone here can point you in the right direction!

I've got a cookbook for the sort of nostalgic foods that my grandmother used to make and I love reading it and cooking from it once in a while.

Marmite27 · 09/05/2025 09:43

I’ve got quite a few of the Hamlyn books, but had a cull a while back and it looks like it was one that went.

I’ve checked the BBC Good food 101 Chicken recipes, and there’s no satay chicken recipe in there.

EasterBunnyFeelingFunny · 09/05/2025 09:52

I wonder if the 10 people watching the yellow Hamlyn Chicken book on eBay when I checked just now happen to be mumsnetters...

I can't seem to attach the photo for you @Exhaustedlittlepigeon but it's yellow (close enough to orange?) sooo it's quite possible it's the one!

Marmite27 · 09/05/2025 10:21

I had this version, which could look brown depending on the light. Probably worth a punt OP for £2.99?

I have a Sainsbury’s one, they must have made some for different brands?

Here's the one I found on eBay.

The cover checks out as quite likely there might be a chicken satay recipe inside.
