Whenever I have been to Aldi and Lidl abroad, they sell every drinks cans and bottles separately - alcohol and soft drinks. So you can buy 3 bottles of beer which come in cases of 12-18, as well as the full case. I think there was about 5% saving to buying the full case.

This proved valuable when I wanted to buy a couple cans of beer and soft drinks to enjoy on the hotel room balcony/on the beach.

Why isn't this model used here?

They have single cans and bottles in my aldi - it is a big store though so it may depend on size

Not here. In Aldi in Spain, they have bottles of beer which are about 50c each and the crates of 15 are about €7. The signs shows two prices.

Very impressed with Lidl in Croatia selling ice creams individually too.

Is it a deposit for the crate though?

Where are you talking about? They sell individual bottles and cans in pretty much all uk supermarkets. It’s not that uncommon. They don’t open up a multipack but they do have singles for sale.

I think OP means you can literally open a multipack and take a bottle. It’s the same where I’m from.

Not sure why you can’t do that here though. Maybe the brits just want all or nothing 🤣
