A reassuring response from M&S
I cannot believe all the supermarkets have gone with vac pac mince - it’s disgusting mush

It looks minging but once cooked it's absolutely fine.

I prefer it in some ways. Mince never used to come in stringy lines and I really dislike a meal if the mince is still in stringy lines when cooked. You need to need to break those up too whilst cooking, otherwise it's not really minced us it?

I got it as a substitute and thought it looked like dog food but gave it a try - now I don't buy the other kind. You need a stiff kind of spoon or spatula to really break it up the whole time it browns but it's much fluffier if that's the right word imo.

I thought it was completely fine until I was making a massive bolognese and I had one ordinary packet of mince and one vacuum packed and they cooked so differently.

Can you grind your own meat? I buy cuts I like and do it myself before cooking or do a batch and freeze by weight.

I use an egg whisk to break it up - easier than a spatula.

I use a mince masher

Hideous stuff. I won’t buy it.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 02/04/2025 00:25

I don't like it. So I buy from other supermarkets or from the butcher.

Really don’t have a problem with it all. Zero difference to the end result in recipes. Overuse of plastic packaging and a burning planet worries me far more than having to break up mince. We are going to have to face far more inconveniences in our battle with global warming.

Seriously disappointed with M&S, think I’ll write and ask why on earth they haven’t changed their packaging yet. Will do it when I complain about their advertising on GB news which is even more reason to boycott the store.

I don't tend to buy meat in M&S but agree, it's disappointing they haven't kept up with other supermarkets on this.
