Hi, I’m doing a large buffet next week and want to do pulled pork as one of the options in a slow cooker. I’m not a huge fan of bbq sauce or ketchup though so trying to find different recipes. Does anyone have any recipes they’ve used which come out delicious?
Also, has any one made it in advance or is it best to eat on the day of cooking? Thanks in advance

Yes, me! I make this recipe all the time and it always comes out brilliantly. Although I cook it for longer than the recipe says - sometimes for up to 8-9 hours. Good luck and enjoy! https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/slow-cooker-pulled-pork

Slow cooker pulled pork

Succulent pulled pork spiced with paprika and cinnamon is oh-so simple when you make it in the slow cooker. Serve with fennel and apple slices in bread rolls

Ps. I normally do it on the day and have it for dinner. If you need it for lunch, you could cook it over night and then reheat at lunch time by pouring over the juices and popping in the oven for 20 mins.

I make this one - it’s from one of the Fast800 recipe books (but it really doesn’t taste like ‘diet’ food at all!)

PERFECT PULLED PORK: 192 CALORIES

Meat lovers can rejoice with this juicy pulled pork recipe that can be enjoyed as a wrap

This reheats beautifully, so can be enjoyed the next day. Serve in wraps made from Little Gem leaves topped with diced cornichons.

Serves 6 Per serving: 192 cals l Protein 28g l Fat 5g l Fibre 0.5g l Carbs 3g

  • 1kg pork shoulder joint, rind on
For the marinade
  • 45g tomato purée (around 3tbsp)
  • 30g chipotle paste (around 2tbsp)
  • Juice of 3 large oranges
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 1tsp flaked sea salt
  • 1tsp ground cumin
  • 1tsp ground allspice
  • 1tsp coarsely ground black pepper

Place all the marinade ingredients in a large non-metallic bowl and whisk until combined.

Remove any string from the pork and put the joint in the marinade. Turn several times to coat.

Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least 8 hours or overnight.

Preheat oven to 170°C/fan 150°C/gas 3. Put the pork and its marinade in a casserole, cover and bake for about 3 hours, or until the pork falls apart when prodded with a fork.

Check after a couple of hours, adding water if needed to keep the pork moist.
Transfer to a warmed platter and shred with two forks, discarding the rind and fat. Spoon the cooking juices over.

As alternative - I don't really like pulled pork, it's a bit bland and soft for my liking. I end up going overboard with pickled veg and hot sauce to give it some oomph.

Instead I make pork carnitas which is cooked in a spicy, citrussy marinade and shredded, then chucked under the grill to crisp up a little. Absolutely amazing in tacos with a zesty salsa. I have a pressure cooker and have used this recipe in the past, it's worked really well www.gimmesomeoven.com/instant-pot-crispy-carnitas/. There are plenty of other recipes online if you don't have a pressure cooker or slow cooker too. I think I've even seen a few on the BBC Good Food site.

Ooh, following, OP, I also hate BBQ sauce, rancho type, smokey/ sweet flavourings, but LOVE pulled pork.

Ottolenghis pulled pork vindaloo is delicious and worlds away from BBQ sauce/ketchup vibe, but perhaps not what your are looking for? Crispy carnitas as suggested by PP could be a good call, I’ve used Joshua Weismann's recipe which was very simple.

My mum makes this Korean style pulled pork which is gorgeous. I agree the Recipe tin eats recipe posted above is great.
