How is cheese on toast a starter?!

I was coming on to say chicken wings, or a nice chowder, with a bowl of chips to fill it out.

Caesar Salad, soup, dhal, fish cakes.

storminabuttercup · 10/03/2025 14:50

Mussels
Soup
Been known to have prawn cocktail as my evening meal with bread (and chips if I'm honest)

LetMeGoogleThat · 10/03/2025 14:52

Baked camembert, the whole thing to myself!

CoastalCalm · 10/03/2025 14:53

Any really even soup

Actually not potato skins , I hate those things being offered as a starter for like £7 and a larger portion for a main would be even worse

Gliblet · 10/03/2025 14:55

In a slightly larger serving or at average starter size?

I can remember staying at a hotel a few years ago and ordering deep fried brie as a starter. It definitely didn't say 'giant' or 'for two' on the menu but what arrived was a whole supermarket size brie wedge, deep fried, with sourdough toast and chilli jam. Hyooge.

I would not really consider cheese on toast a starter.

Calamari or Prawns are often a starter that I have as a main with a portion of chips to bulk out. Garlic mushrooms is another. Scallops also (normally as I am not willing to pay the large price for a main course portion).

Cheese on toast is lunch.
Cheese on toast with soup is a big lunch.

Mixed kebab from the local Indian takeaway. It’s billed as a starter, but is plenty big enough for a main meal. Especially as they have an endearing habit of throwing in a couple of free onion bhajis as well!

I’m hungry now…

Cheese on toast with beans. 😊 Think I'm going to have that for my tea.

Gizlotsmum · 10/03/2025 15:48

Bruschetta
garlic mushrooms on toast
hummus with bread

People who are confused about cheese on toast as a starter, why?

Do you feel the same when garlic bread with cheese os offered as a starter in some restaurants?

We don't have cheese on toast as a starter but would sometimes have a huge bowl of minestrone soup served with toasted cheese on slices of French bread as our main meal.

I was having a 1970's themed dinner party, & guests were ill so cancelled.

The steak could wait, but the prawn cocktails needed using.

2 each, with chips. And if I'm honest, I could have had the Black Forest Gateau as a main course.

Deedeesharpwhatkindoflady · 10/03/2025 17:58

Prawn Tempura
Calamari
Caesar Salad
Bruschetta
Baked Brie/Camembert with rocket and balsamic vinegar and french bread
Chowder

mindutopia · 10/07/2025 12:59

My kids (7 & 12) get the garlic king prawn starter as a main every time we go to our village pub. 😂

It’s like £7 for 4 prawns in shell as a starter. But for £16, as a main, you get 8 prawns plus chips and a nice salad. Last time I got it too.

Tandoori chicken from our local Indian. Beautiful pieces of tandoori chicken breast, served with salad.

chattyness · 10/07/2025 14:47

Soup but with some buttery mash potatoes in the middle of the bowl and the soup poured over the top to make it more filling. We use to have this for tea sometimes when I was a wee girl
