How do I make sourdough bread?

My lovely DIL has given me a sourdough starter which has been sitting in my fridge for a couple of weeks as she gave it to me just before I went on holiday.

I’m a complete sourdough virgin so please help me with what to do next! I’m guessing I need to wake the starter up and feed it a bit before I use it? How do I do that? What’s the best equipment to use (the starter is in a tiny jam jar with no room to add anything else to currently)?

How do I know when it is usable and once it is ready to go, please could I have some recipes including how much starter to use. And advice on how to keep the starter going after I’ve taken some out and used it.

My preference is for wholemeal and rye breads but white sourdough is also good.

if you can help, many thanks!

I recommend having a look round
https://foodbodsourdough.com & also maybe asking your DIL about her favourite recipes.

Youtube, google or make it a weekend thing with DIL.
It's a lot of info depending how deep you want to go to be commenting on mumsnet. Good luck!

Take a look at Richard Bertinet - he has a course of BBC Maestro which has made my DP into a sourdough master.

Be prepared for the starter to take over your life though - hungry, needy little buggers. Like a Tamagotchi but for grown ups.
