Austrian food inspo for Eurovision

TheresaBackinbud · 23/02/2025 12:37

I have drawn Austria in the work Eurovision lunch. Ie we bring in a dish from our countries and have a buffet lunch.

Apart from:

anything pork
sauerkraut
snitzel
potatoes and cheese
Apple strudel

is there anything I can take which will be tasty, authentic and easy to prepare? We have ovens at work so I can reheat a dish or cook something quickly from scratch.

please help 🇦🇹

Maybe an Austrian potato salad? I've made this before and it's lovely!

No mayonnaise, which is ideal for me as I can't bear the stuff.

Or otherwise maybe a Sachertorte?

LIZS · 23/02/2025 13:06

Soup with dumplings

TheLongRider · 23/02/2025 13:12

Kaiserschmarrn - chunky pancake pieces. Absolutely delicious.

TheresaBackinbud · 23/02/2025 14:35

Thank you. I’ll google the recipes and have a practice.

Apricot cakes like this are popular in Austria (and Germany):

So are plum cakes:

Nigella's recipe for Linzer cookies:

+1 for Kaiserschmarren. But a baked cheesecake might be easier to transport. Or Donauwelle Kuchen. Or a Viennese whirl type biscuit?

This website has some good ideas too.

Caspianberg · 24/02/2025 16:40

Goulash - pre make at home and just heat. With rye bread

Apple strudel cake - tray bake

austrian potato salad is good idea

Kaiserschmarm is lovely, but it’s not great reheated. Spaetzle is also lovely with goulash but horrible reheated so don’t bother ( but both worth making at home just for your to eat)

Almdudler, a herbal lemonade is great - you can buy it online.
Otherwise Red Bull.

Dallasdays · 24/02/2025 16:47

Beef ghoulash. I make in the slow cooker. Then reheat at work

Cyclistmumgrandma · 24/02/2025 16:47

What's wrong with
anything pork
sauerkraut
snitzel
potatoes and cheese
Apple strudel
They are the obvious things?

ElleDeeCB · 24/02/2025 16:49

Or you could buy some Mozartkugeln (Mozartball) chocolates. Yum.

I imagine it's because OP's already thought of those so doesn't want 5 pages of people saying "strudel!"

Also, it sounds like it's potentially for work and pork could be problematic from a religious pov

Cyclistmumgrandma · 24/02/2025 16:52

OK,
Käsespäzli
www.daringgourmet.com/kasespatzle-swabian-german-macaroni-and-cheese/

Erdäpfelgulsch
www.lilvienna.com/creamy-potato-goulash/

Butterflyfern · 24/02/2025 16:53

My vote is for Spätzle or Kasespätzle. Very easy to make, very typically Tyrolian Austrian.

Alternatively, I know there are parts of Austria near Graz that go mad for chanterelle mushrooms when they're in season. Austria has a much more local and seasonal approach to food than we do.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 24/02/2025 16:54

Or Linzer Torte

Kipferl, I recently learned that croissants were based on these so could be quite easy if you buy croissant dough from the supermarket. Although on searching this I came across a cake shop which delivers all over the UK so I'd probably just order a few things from there because I'm lazy 😂. Austrian cakes

Exactly. Which is why I’ve asked for other suggestions which have been very helpful.
