Veggie pulled pork (no jackfruit or mushrooms)

I can't find jackfruit anywhere for the life of me - I usually get it in Lidl. What else can I use for a pulled pork substitute? I don't like mushrooms.

There are all kind of weird and wonderful suggestions on the internet but I'd like a recommendation from a mumsnetter who's actually successfully made something! Thank you

I have never cooked it, but my employee does pulled oats and they are nice

BuntyNuffins · 08/02/2025 18:16

I know it's not what you're asking but I get my jackfruit in sainsbury's.
I found a few in my Aldi on monday too.

BuntyNuffins · 08/02/2025 18:17

Oh and Aldi also (sometimes) have pulled NO pork/ NO duck in the frozen section.

Thank you! I have been to Aldi and they had none and nothing in the frozen or veggie sections that would be a decent replacement. Sainsbury's is one place I didn't try actually so that is helpful. I have a tried and trusted jackfruit recipe so I would rather use that if I can actually bloody find some.

Sorry for the multiple posts but I keep remembering stuff after I hit the button 😅I have also used Vivera plant based greek/ kebab/ schwarma as a pulled pork substitute in a pinch, it comes in thin strips so its a little chunkier than what you'd want. That's in the fresh aisle at tesco, not sure where else stocks it.

probablynotthesame · 08/02/2025 18:22

I'm intrigued to know what this trusted jackfruit recipe is now!

Frowningprovidence · 08/02/2025 18:23

Would a tin of artichoke hearts be a similar texture.

DUsername · 08/02/2025 18:29

The vivera stuff is a good idea - I'm sure I've seen that in our Tesco actually.

Artichoke hearts is genius too - I've just googled and found a few recipes for veggie pulled pork using those. Thank you!

I'll link my recipe now, it's nothing exciting to be honest but I know it works.

Thanks, going to give this a try 😋

@DUsername
It's worth noting that in my sainsburys, the jackfruit is stocked near the canned veg.
But in morrisons or tesco etc (when they have it) it's usually in the world food aisle. Sainsburys is the only place I know to have it in stock consistently.

witwatwoo · 08/02/2025 18:58

Aldi and Morrisons both sell it

DUsername · 08/02/2025 18:59

Thanks, I looked EVERYWHERE. World food aisle, canned veg, canned fruit. DH has said he'll go off on a mission to find some tomorrow - the vivera stuff and the artichoke hearts will be my plan b

Morrisons and Sainsbury's are both on the list tomorrow. I already tried Aldi.

Are you lucky enough to have a Chinese supermarket nearby? You can usually buy jackfruit there.

PigInADuvet · 08/02/2025 19:08

Aldi currently have pulled no-pork in their freezer section. It's their own rebrand of the Redefine Meat version. It might be end of line but my local aldi still have loads

Phunkychicken · 08/02/2025 19:14

I think Nadya did something with banana peel that ended up shredded and 'pulled'?

CherryRipe1 · 08/02/2025 19:33

Seitan? Don't know if supermarkets sell it though.

BTsrule · 08/02/2025 19:57

I know you said you don’t like mushrooms but have you tried fable mushrooms - looks and tastes (with some additions) like shredded beef brisket? And nothing like mushrooms.

Kingsleadhat · 08/02/2025 20:07

I wonder if aubergine would work?

mindutopia · 10/02/2025 16:49

Asian grocery. If none near you, you can order online.

booksforever · 15/02/2025 13:08

I made one that used green lentils and grated carrots. Not sure how to add a link but if you Google "vegan pulled pork with lentils " it should come up. All the vegetarians liked it.

JudgeBread · 15/02/2025 13:12

Seitan makes a great faux pulled meat, pretty easy to make it yourself too! I think it's nicer than jackfruit.

HoppityBun · 17/02/2025 00:56

Hearts of palm or pressed and shredded form tofu
