Freezing unopened, raw (pre-packed) sausages one day after use-by date? Safe to defrost later and eat?

Bought sausages, the use-by date wasn't printed in the box correctly (half in box, half out on darker packaging, so hard to see). Thought the best before was 25th Jan but just double-checked with the magnifying glass and the use-by date was yesterday!

Can't eat them today so just shoved them in the freezer. They're completely sealed in packaging.

Will they be safe to eat if we defrost and use the same day some time in the next week?
Or, failing that, rather than waste them, would it be okay to defrost, cook and give to the dogs?
Really reluctant to just bin them! We hate food waste!

I wouldn't normally be so anxious about use-by dates but I am when it comes to pork (and chicken)!
Thanks

So long as they're cooked as soon as they're defrosted, they'll be absolutely fine. I've done this a few times with no issues x

Absolutely fine. I often do this

EightElectricEels · 24/01/2025 20:44

I've done this 2 days past. Though I tend to cook a bit longer straight from frozen.

They'll be fine.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 25/01/2025 06:52

Yup. I’d have no problem! They’ll be fine to eat.

I'd probably have cooked them then tried to use within the next 2/3 days in a recipe. Not sure I'd freeze after use by date (it is use by not best before on sausages)

pinkwaffles · 25/01/2025 07:17

They'll probably be fine.

But they're obviously a day after their use by date, so no one on here can actually guarantee that they'll be fine. You are taking a small risk, so it's up to you.

I have had meat before that started to smell a day after its use by.

Check there's no smell when you defrost them.

user989 · 25/01/2025 07:21

Smell them. If they smell fine they are likely to be fine. Just had them immediately you defrost them and cook them thoroughly

CatsorDogsrule · 25/01/2025 07:21

I also would have cooked them and assuming they didn't smell bad, then cooled and frozen them if not to be used within a couple of days. Frozen cooked sausages are so handy as they reheat from frozen in the microwave within a couple of minutes.

We're always throwing things in the freezer we've not opened but the date has run out - a day or two is fine

Anotherfrozenpizzafortea · 25/01/2025 13:54

I'm slack as fuck with use by dates but I used to work in a butchers and would NOT be eating or freezing sausages even one day after the use by date.
