Alternative to polenta?

10 replies

Aiming to bake a cake tomorrow which needs polenta.

My local supermarket doesn't stock it.

What else could I use that is widely available?

Semolina

@Nonametonight
Thanks.

But I've just looked and they only stock it ready-made in a tin!!

I'm guessing you won't be able to get any kind of cornmeal if you can't get polenta or semolina - no other local food shops that might have a bag? Sometimes small supermarkets aren't the best for this sort of thing.

If not, I think you'll just need to choose another recipe - this is the advice on the Nigella site and it looks like the suggestions already given are the only alternatives: https://www.nigella.com/ask/alternative-to-polenta

I can't buy polenta or cornmeal where I live in India. Can I use all-purpose flour in the Lemon Polenta Cake instead?

Any Polish supermarkets in your town? They usually have it or similar

Thank you all for your suggestions...
I may use ground almonds.

I expect it will make the cake taste very almondy but I don't mind that.

Ground almonds will make it much nicer than stinky old polenta.
