Jam tarts

DS came home from school the other day having made a sort of jam tart that he loved and wants to make for all the family today. He said they just got given pastry already shaped into a curved shape and added the jam and curd.

What kind of pastry would that be that I need to buy? DH knows more about this sort of thing and he's heading to the shop but he's not sure either. Is it puff pastry or is there a flatter pre-made one?

I know nothing about pastry!

Jam Tarts would usually be made with shortcrust pastry which doesn't puff up - but puff pastry tarts/mince pies are ok too! You might be better off googling it and seeing which type look like the ones he made.

Thank you. Shortcrust is the other kind I've heard of. Totally clueless. In.my defence I can make excellent cakes and biscuits but the world of pastry is out of my comfort zone!

Get a roll of decent quality shortcrust, that'll make lovely jam tarts. 😋

Also, I'd be very much encouraging all and any cooking ideas he has as it's a valuable life skill for him. Can he do a roast for tomorrow? 😉

He dies like helping DH cook. I don't do much of it, never done a roast.

Actually I have once ever. But only because DH left me very detailed instructions and timings.

It was much more rough and ready than that. Looked like a sheet of pastry someone had shaped around their balled fist. 😂
