Dates wrapped in bacon

My DB has requested dates wrapped in bacon as a side for Christmas dinner this year. It's not really something I would ear in that I'm not a huge fan of pork and don't really like sweet things as a main. After looking online I found a lot of recipes stuff the dates with goats cheese which sounds nice but are there any other recipes I should try? Would basting them in maple syrup be OTT?

The dates with goats cheese wrapped in bacon are amazing. I wouldn’t attempt to do anything more complicated than that. Do get proper medjool dates (not the other dry ones) and use streaky not back bacon. Maple syrup would make them too sticky, I think.

Great thanks! All good tips. Will go with the goats cheese filling then. Was a bit dubious about the maple syrup as dates are so sweet anyway!

This sounds like a riff on the classic 'devils on horseback', which are prunes stuffed with chutney and wrapped in bacon.

I'd check he doesn't mean prunes. No need for a recipe as such: literally just dried squashy prunes, wrap each one in good quality streaky bacon, cook like you would pigs in blankets.

does anyone have a recipe for the goat's cheese version? sounds amazibg ...

Ygfrhj · 12/12/2024 15:50

I've had them with blue cheese inside, it offsets the sweetness a little more.

@ThisJollyLimeBird I actually love cooking for people and it's my favourite thing when I can cook something I know they'll enjoy!

i Do these with blue cheese too - absolutely amazing! Definitely choose quality dates - it has to be the medjool dates.

I think it's just half the dates, remove the stone the spoon soft goats cheese in. Cut slices of bacon in half length ways, roll up the dates/cheese combo and bake in the oven!

I was wondering about blue cheese! Would you recommend it over the goats cheese?

Just don't eat too many in one sitting. I learnt that the hard way......

thank you!

(Ponders soaking prune in cognac first)

The dates and bacon is a Spanish dish. Absolutely lovely 😍
