Is there a substitute for this ? What does it taste like ?

I've got sriracha, gochujang, cholula, tabasco, plus fresh chillies, & several varieties of chilli powder in the cupboard/fridge,

Thanks.

Chipotles in adobo is very flavourful. I would describe it as fruity and spicy and smokey. They're actually dried and smoked jalapeño peppers in a sauce with tomatoes, onion and vinegar.

What are you preparing that you would use the chipotles?

I know there's a recipe for making your own in Thomasina Miers book, so might be on website?

Hit send too soon...

If your dish already has tomato in it, I would suggest smoked paprika, onions and a splash of apple cider vinegar. If you happen to have chipotle chile powder, that would definitely work.

If you don't need it for today, Waitrose sells chipotle powder and sometimes the actual chiles in adobo. Otherwise, consider Mex Grocer for your needs: www.mexgrocer.co.uk

Thomasina's recipe requires that you have dried chiles on hand. Those are found at places like MexGrocer and not at your local grocery store in the UK but it's a bit of a faff and expensive. You could just order it online already done.

Basically, it's not easy to substitute.

Thanks for the replies. I was trying to avoid buying yet another jar, when I could use a substitute.

I'm planning Beef Barbacoa; it was on the breakfast bar of the hotel I stayed in during a long stay in Mexico.

I've copied this from an Amazon advert, so I'll try substituting smoked paprika & vinegar

Dunno what happened to the pic, but it listed the ingredients of a commercial jar.

Personally, I would wait to get a small can of the chipotle in adobo. It's a distinct flavor and I would hate for the substitute not to be right.

You're right. I've ordered a jar from Amazon.
