Xmas cake with royal icing

I'm the sole cake eater here so don't bother making one anymore, I usually buy a small one just for me and any random guests.
I hate soft fondant icing though.
M and s has always been my go to as they did a cake with royal icing but this year I can't see one in there, it's all soft iced bleugh.
Anyone seen a royal iced cake ?

Haven't but want one. I might buy an uniced one and ice it myself otherwise

I got one from Ocado but I didn't check if it's hard or not. Try Waitrose?

It's easy to do yourself! You can buy royal icing mix that just needs water (rather than beating icing sugar with egg white for 10 minutes yourself) and the messy snow drift looks just fine on a Christmas cake.

Agree that best option is to buy an un-iced cake and ice it yourself. Make sure you add glycerine, otherwise the icing will set rock hard.

marylou25 · 08/12/2024 17:39

If you're buying the pack of just add water royal icing it already has glycerine added, if you're making it yourself from sugar/egg white then you do need glycerine.

Hard to get anymore and what really annoys me is I see cakes in shops saying traditionally royal iced and there is fondant on them! Same as butterfly buns with just the tops cut off and stuck on again over the icing, no cutting in half to resemble the butterfly wings they are meant to be! Rant over!

So basically have a good look at the cake if you're buying it and don't just go by what the label says is on it.

Thanks guys
Didn't want to have to faff about but couldn't find one anywhere
So took your advice
Packet of marzipan and pack of royal
Icing sugar , plus some retro figures from Amazon .
Grandson will love it even if it is a bit wonky and snowmen look more like ghosts 🤣
