So currently waiting for heart surgery which could be pretty major and in next couple of weeks
In the meantime I'm on a very strict heart health diet but SO miss the salt
It's not until you have to really count it like your life depended on it that you realise how it's in so many foods.
I'm using herbs but not very good with which ones to choose
Food is now mostly plant based but having salmon or haddock a couple of times a week with plain green veg dressed with a dash of benecol butter and some black pepper.
I miss a spicy curry and I can't even marinade tofu in much as all the recipes I've found seem to include soy sauce or hoisin or similar
Any idea how i can please make my rather bland diet more flavoursome please
Thank you

Not specifically for heart health but kidney friendly diets might meet your needs?

Most are low salt and you can filter by dietary need.

Smoked paprika perks most things up. lightly coat chicken breast in smoked paprika and thyme (I would add olive oil as well but you probably don’t need that), then in the oven for 20 minutes. It works on fish too and roast cauliflower. Rose harrisa paste is good too.

I made this curry the other day -

You could serve with some low fat yoghurt, chopped cucumber onion mint and coriander, squeeze of lemon juice

What about curries? Garlic, ginger, chili, loads of onion, a good curry powder or spice mix. You can skip the chili and get a mild curry powder if you don’t want spice.

For salmon - toast some sesame seeds in a pan, set aside. Then rub minced ginger and garlic and chilli along your salmon fillets and pan fry or bake- sprinkle with the toasted sesame seeds.

Or dill and lemon with salmon is a classic combo but I'm not a huge fan of dill.

Chives are very good at perking things up

Your palate will soon get used to the low salt and you'll find unsalted food tastier every day.

Try asking Chatgpt for meal recipes. You can even stipulate the calorie content you want.

mindutopia · 07/12/2024 12:34

Try adding garlic/spices and vinegar/lemon to things.

MrsHemswoth · 07/12/2024 12:45

Lemon juice really helps enhance flavour and is overlooked! Dash of balsamic vinegar, garlic, onions, ginger as others have said. Smoked Paprika is quite punchy too
