How long did you cook it for? Yellow spilt peas can take well over an hour unless you have a pressure cooker.

They need overnight soaking + a hard 10 minute boil, plus simmering until almost cooked before adding anything else.

You should boil the split peas until tender.(Having soaked overnight)
Fry onions and veg.
Add drained peas and veg stock.
Simmer for an hour.Liquidize.

About two hours at above medium heat then low heat half hour.

Did you add salt when you cooked the peas?

Thevelvelletes · 01/12/2024 19:47

No .I can see from replies I should have soaked overnight in the same way I do with broth mix.thank you all for the advice..will have another crack at it next weekend.

This is right, if they don’t get that initial blast they didn’t seem to cook properly, would def do separately before draining and adding to other veg.

Had they been in the cupboard a while? I used up some rather old soup mix recently which got a very long soak before cooking and was cooked for absolutely ages and the marrowfat peas were still pretty hard. Would not use soup mix again after this experience, actually.

Yellow pea soup does not sound appetising!

Thevelvelletes · 01/12/2024 20:02

No not been in cupboard ages I'd just bought them on Saturday morning.

Salt will make them hard. You have to add it at the end.

CMOTDibbler · 02/12/2024 11:45

I'd not throw it away, either sling it in a slow cooker for 8 hours or put it on a low flame, covered and give it a few hours simmering. Its like hot soaking them again, just takes longer. And even sitting in the fridge overnight they soak up water

Thevelvelletes · 02/12/2024 15:56

Thanks but ditched it .
Hopefully it turns out right at the next try.

I think you were right to ditch it. I had this problem too, and didn't realise about the hard boil part. I did persevere, but they never recovered.
