Chocolate birthday cake help

I need a chocolate cake recipe for DCs birthday. I’m not doing anything sculptural with it (just decorating the top) but would like it to look neat. Problem is it needs to be pretty sizeable and I prefer a fudgey type cake with ganache. Would that work or do I need to do buttercream? And does anyone have a recipe they can recommend?

This is the best chocolate cake recipe ever. I have made it dozens of times and it is a winner.

Edited to say you can omit the apricot jam if you prefer. You can also use chocolate buttercream icing instead of ganache.

Nigella's Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake or Chocolate Fudge Cake. Both utterly fabulous. You can size both of them up if you need to.

It really is fabulous! I often double up the ingredients and make in 2 x 25cm tins. I slice the two cakes horizontally to make 4 layers, then sandwich with a basic chocolate buttercream. Then pour ganache over the whole cake and pile on masses of chocolates/sweets - chunks of crunchie, maltesers, minstrels etc. Always a winner!

@MakemineaGandT Yes, that's a great recipe. my only issue with it is that I do NOT get two decent layers. I don't care - I hate the act of slicing and layering a cake anyway! Grin But I always wonder what Iv'e done wrong.

We have done this for DD's birthday many times until we discovered she was lactose intolerant. The ganache is also brilliant and I've done it a few times for other cakes.

The Hummingbird Bakery Brooklyn Blackout cake is amazing. Recipe should be available online.

This is my go to, and it is so easy to make! I get endless compliments, it tastes lovely and fudgy, stays moist for days. I hate light brown, dry chocolate cakes where they don't taste of chocolate. I love butter im vanilla cake, but always prefer chocolate cake made with oil, after sampling many recipes. This one is a proper chocolate cake. Oh and it is one bowl!!
