Chocolate cake sponge too light

Newgolddream70 · 02/11/2024 17:20

I've just made a chocolate cake (using cocoa powder) and the sponge is light brown rather than dark and chocolatey looking. I used cocoa powder as per the recipe. This was a practice cake so I'd like to get it darker next time for the 'real thing'. Any ideas?

Look at www.bbcgoodfood.com and find the Ultimate Chocolate cake recipe. There is minimal flour and made with melted chocolate in the sponge.
It is very chocolately, decadent & delicious.

Could there be a typo in the recipe? If you add enough cocoa, it will always be dark.

I always add much more ( probably double ) the cocoa powder as we like a dark chocolate cake
Also , just in case ….I know you said it’s cocoa , but just checking you’re not using drinking chocolate ? It’s not the same thing

I recently made this one for my sons birthday and everyone loved it

I used Dr Oetker fine dark cocoa powder for the sponge.

Thanks everyone. It was definitely cocoa powder! I shall check out the other recipes ☺️
