Snow White style red apples

I don’t ever see those red apples any more, used to have them when I was a kid. Is it because they are seasonal, or do we not get them anymore?

I always wonder this as they were my favourite. I don't think I've seen them since I was at school, at least. So 20 odd years.

MrsKarlUrban · 12/10/2024 07:48

I think they are called Washington Red. They sell a red delicious in marksies but it's not the same. I used to love those.

We used to get Red Delicious when I was young but they were anything but delicious IIRC, looked beautiful but were tasteless and floury. I guess that's why you rarely see them now.

Plump82 · 12/10/2024 07:54

I'm sure the ones Im thinking of were called McIntosh apples. Super shiny.

Used to get Macintosh Reds when I was little in the 70s but they didnt taste of much. Proper red, shiny Snow White apples in appearance though

I love a Red Delicious I go to M&S especially when they are in stock! My favourite Apple!

Yep these are the ones I'd think of as Snow White apples. If you get a good one they are nice but that's very rare.

Macintosh Red are the food of the gods. I can still occasionally get them from a local fruit seller but they have become crazy expensive. They bruise really easily compared to the more popular styles like Pink Lady.

This thread has made me crave an apple!

DustyLee123 · 12/10/2024 09:21

I get Pink Lady for the kids, but they are expensive and I don’t like them. I’d rather have a Royal Gala, but TBH I just don’t seem to like apples anymore. Not sure if it’s me, or if they don’t taste like they used to.

Apples make me hungry so I don't eat them but really could go one now!

Ribenaberry12 · 12/10/2024 10:34

I remember Washington Reds when I was a kid. Haven’t seen them for years.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/10/2024 10:46

If I eat an apple it makes me want something more, and usually something unhealthy!
Those red delicious were always crap. Soft and tasteless. We used to get them at work but nobody liked them.
I don't know why but apples aren't as good as they used to be, I'm sure. They are always too big as well. I get bored half way through!

dudsville · 12/10/2024 10:48

I agree with the others. It's a pretty apple, but so bland! And usually huge too, so a lot of bland!

PaininthePreferbial · 12/10/2024 11:33

So much food is grown for how transportable it is and how long it'll keep, these are the more important factors to the sellers over flavour. Orchards are being destroyed because the apples don't suit the modern market.

My neighbour has an apple tree and ends up giving so many away as they don't store well, apart from what she makes with them and freezes. They are such a seasonal treat, they have such flavour.

xsquared · 12/10/2024 14:18

Red chief were super red and shiny.

You cam still get red mackintosh in green grocers if you're lucky.

indio32 · 13/10/2024 17:17

You used to get a huge range of fruit and veg but now not so much. When the likes of Tesco's boss is getting paid ~£200,000 a week it's much more profitable to stock a much smaller range. Hence goodbye snow white red apples!
