How long do you expect a box of grapes to last ?

3 people in family
other fruit is purchased
500g box of grapes

how long would you expect that to last ? Not as in how long it would take to go off, how long would you expect that box of grapes to be around for ? Eg, one - two days, that evening, some left for lunch the next day

the reason I ask is because apparently I have unreasonable expectations at how quickly (or not) they might be eaten.

A day and a half if you're lucky

The food is bought to be eaten, it's fruit. It's difficult to get riled about.

My brother maintains that grapes are evil. You get in from work and think oh, I'll have a cheeky grape before I make tea' then half an hour later there are no grapes and you're too full for tea.

A whole punnet of grapes? Well there's two of us in our house and I'd expect it to last the better part of a week if the one in our fridge right now is anything to go by.

AutumnalCosiness · 09/10/2024 20:14

I'd rather they eat them than the crap they buy in the corner shop!

TheChosenTwo · 09/10/2024 20:18

Probably a day, there are 5 of us and I only buy one punnet a week of grapes - we all like them but they’re really really high in (natural!!) sugar. I only know this because my niece is diabetic and will only ever eat grapes when on her way up from a hypo and it’s stuck with me forever more!

before everyone comes for me, I know they’re not bad for you 😂 and fruit is healthy and eating some grapes is better for you than eating a mars bar nutritionally speaking! I do buy plenty of other fruit too. But it just resonated with me that I should be sparing with them 😂

We have a slightly convoluted rule, but it works. Household is me and between 1-3 ravenous young adults, Uni etc dependent.

After the Big Shop, including fruit, drops on Saturday, anyone who can be arsed has until tea time to help themselves & make up a personal fridge stash box (in an old divided Sistema, usually). You are allowed to take a fair share only - ie if everyone's home, no more than a quarter of each type of fruit.

After dinner on Saturday, all remaining un 'bagsied' fruit is fair game.

The kids came up with it a few years ago, after one too many arguments, & it mostly works, even if I think it's a bit ridiculous. At least everyone - including me - gets the option to take a share of everything.

As PP, once all 'fridge fruit' is eaten by about Monday, they just have to survive on apples/bananas/oranges...

I don't think you're unreasonable. People need to have a bit of consideration for each other. We have the same problem in our household. Some members of the family either eat a lot of something or leave it to go off. I tend to eat a little bit of a lot of different things and mentally divide the food by the number of people and don't exceed my 'share' without asking the other members first. Otherwise it makes it very hard to plan purchases or make nutritious meals if you only have cabbage left. Mushrooms/yogurt is our problem. Gone by the second day.

They're a lot of ifs and buts but I would expect the grapes to last at least 4 days or until the next big shop 6 -7 days later. You don't need to be gorging yourself on them as they're very high sugar. I tend to choose a little of everything so we never completely run out of one thing.

Btw - grapes freeze really well and not many people expect to find them there😉

3 days on my own
1 punnet fills 3 of my grape lunch tubs. Also take 2 satsumas and an apple to work and have berries in the evening.

Either 20 minutes or 3 weeks until I throw it away., There's no way of knowing.
