Olive oil. Every day. Where from?

So I’m not a connoisseur or a ponce, but sometimes on salads mostly on cooking.

I’ve noticed the price increase obviously and I tend to get a Tesco or Aldi. Is there some secret olive oil dealer that I need to know about?

I buy single origin olive oil from aldi or lidl. It's proper stuff. I don't know how much it is as I just put it in the trolley.

I mix with live apple cider vinegar as a salad dressing.

Thanks, obviously I’ve just got back from there and forgot to get any!

It's got really expensive in Aldi too, over £7 when I last went so I haven't bought any for a while

Sarah Brewer's Origins olive oil is a gamechanger for health and wellbeing.

BaronessBomburst · 01/09/2024 12:41

Nope. The price has gone up and up in the last few years. I pay around €7 - €8 a litre and can't get it cheaper anywhere. It was the same price in Mercadona too (Spanish supermarket), which surprised me. A 5 litre bottle was slightly cheaper but still only equivalent to a Lidl offer.

Stirmish · 01/09/2024 13:25

I've stopped buying olive oil because it's ridiculously expensive from every shop

BaronessBomburst · 01/09/2024 17:55

I just got back from Lidl. It's now €8.49 for the cheapest litre bottle.

Comedycook · 01/09/2024 17:57

I had a look at the prices when I was in Greece this summer and it was expensive there too. I buy a Sainsbury's olive oil/veg oil blend which I use for day to day and frying. A tiny tiny bottle of extra virgin for salad dressings. Gone are the days of just picking up a big bottle as a staple.

I just buy it.
It's healthy and I like the taste.

I got a litre of EVOO from M&S for £9 fairly recently. I haven't tried it yet but it wasn't much more than Aldi/Lidl and I'm hoping it's going to be 'this is not just EVOO, this is super extra delicious M&S EVOO', if it isn't I'll probably save my quid or so and get it in Aldi as normal.

If you have a European supermarket nearby it could also be worth looking there.

What I don't understand is if it's to do with the price of olives, why aren't olives themselves expensive? They seem normal price!

Good point, maybe they're pickled years in advance and in a year or two we'll see the price of olives shoot up as well... or maybe it's a variety difference, and eating olives are different to olives you get oil from??

Thommasina · 22/10/2024 18:30

I don't buy EVOO, just regular olive oil. I have asked for posh EVOO for Xmas!

MrsKwazi · 22/10/2024 18:33

I really like the organic one from sainsb own brand. It has a green and peppery taste so great on salads and bread. It’s expensive but I think worth it.

Arrestedforit · 22/10/2024 18:41

Ensure your adult DC dates a wonderful Italian who gifts you litres of it from their family's own grove 😉

Webbymeister · 23/10/2024 12:49

Lol. I have that but very posh bath and body stuff

I just bought an 'olive oil blend' from lidl.
It's mostly sunflower oil with 15% olive oil, £2.29 or something like that. I didn't see the benefit of paying £7 for pure when I can't tell/see any difference.

Webbymeister · 23/10/2024 12:59

Agree. Unless raw on salad etc

I've this morning collected 99 litres of oil from the local lagar, squished from 1086kg of olives from our trees. Pre-Brexit I could have sent you some 🙁
