Out of date coleslaw!

CCC12 · 22/08/2024 19:10

we’ve all accidentally eaten some coleslaw (was unopened) that’s use by date was two days ago. Going on holiday tomorrow… are we in for a terrible night??? It tasted okay…

Er, no, it’ll be fine.

Peonies12 · 22/08/2024 19:14

Surely you’re joking. I wouldn’t even think to check the date on anything apart from raw meat or fish. The dates are so cautious.

Giraffesareawesome · 22/08/2024 19:14

It’s just cabbage, carrot & mayo etc. It will be fine. The worst thing that would happen would be that it tasted a bit fizzy.

onemorerose · 22/08/2024 19:15

If it looked and tasted good enough to eat you’ll be fine.

CeffylCoch · 22/08/2024 19:15

Two days is nothing. You will be fine

soupfiend · 22/08/2024 19:18

I throw caution to the wind about use by/best before dates but the only times Ive had food poisoning in the UK twice was with M+S coleslaw. It was in date!

CCC12 · 22/08/2024 19:18

Thanks all. Sometimes a panicker! Only about travelling tomorrow really.

If it's not fizzy it's fine!

bumsnetto · 17/06/2026 21:11

Agree i had food poisoning from kfc coleslaw when i was younger

PurpleLovecats · 17/06/2026 21:15

As others said, it tastes fizzy if it’s off.

Dearg · 17/06/2026 21:24

If it wasn’t open it’s probably fine. But coleslaw, due to the mayo, is one of those things I dump quickly if it’s not eaten . As in ‘open today, use today, tomorrow, dump after that’.

FateAmenableToChange · 17/06/2026 21:32

Coleslaw is one of the few things that can go bad quite quickly and will cause harm. It does have raw egg yolks in the mayo.

suki1964 · 17/06/2026 23:06

Coleslaw has a three day open life

If the tub was sealed, kept in the fridge, hadn't started to blow and didnt taste fizzy, you will be fine

Commercial mayo is pasteurised.

Thebinisrightthere · 18/06/2026 21:16

It will be absolutely fine

The OP ate the coleslaw nearly two years ago. She's long gone by now!

I hope you mean that in a nice way !😀

Bjorkdidit · 19/06/2026 09:29

I readily play fast and loose with use by dates, but 2 year old coleslaw is a step too far even for me.

Blueuggboots · 19/06/2026 09:33

You’d know if it was off. It goes fizzy!

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 20/06/2026 23:32

My DH eats coleslaw weeks out of date. Either it's fine or he has a constitution of iron.
Agree with pp who say it goes fizzy (probably a while before it becomes toxic)
