If you are buying British beef, it will almost certainly be grass fed. We don’t have huge grain fed beef feedlots in the UK, like in say, the states.

Cows live out on grass all summer and come into the barn for the winter, but are still fed on grass (silage usually, which is just cut fermented grass).

I’d find yourself a good local independent butcher if cost isn’t an issue.

While all (?) beef cows in the UK will eat grass they are also fed a significant amount of grain and concentrate as this fattens them more quickly than on grass only.

If your supermarket beef says grassfed, check the label on the back, every one I’ve checked has said fed grass and grain.

Absolutely nothing wrong with beef finished on grain but the fat profile is different (higher ratio of omega-6 to -3) amongst a few other things.

If you want 100% grassfed beef then Pasture for Life Certification is your best bet.

We used Field and Flower during the pandemic and for a year or two after. They had a very good range and the quality of meat was good. I only stopped using them as they didn't have an organic option.

I posted too soon. We now use Eversfield and have been very pleased with the quality and taste of their meat. I also buy quite a bit of organic meat from Ocado.

The Dorset Meat Company is very good.
