Tempted to freeze a packet of mince as DD has come down with the flu so won't be eating much. Bought the mince yesterday can I freeze it for me and DH for next week - wouldnt feed it to DD though???

we always do this!

Yabbadabbadooo · 15/04/2008 20:42

Yes, you can freeze it any time up until (or after) the BB date. The packet doesn't know when it was bought. If I freeze it on the day of the BB date (or a day or so after it) I put a sticker on it saying it must be eaten the day it's defrosted.

I always assume that if it's before the "use by" or "best before" date it's fine to freeze and would then feed it to anyone - after all, if it's within its dates then the shop could still be selling it and I could then take it home and freeze it on day of purchase, if you see what I mean. Mind you, I'm probably a bit lax about that sort of thing...

AMumInScotland · 15/04/2008 20:43

As long as there's still a couple of days on the "use by" date, it'll be fine for all of you.

onepieceoflollipop · 15/04/2008 20:43

Can I just clarify with an example? It's the 15th today. You bought a pack of mince on the 14th, so it is likely that the "use by" date is for a few days ahead, say the 19th (or whatever). Presumably it has been safely in your fridge since yesterday. I would definitely freeze it. My rationale being that you could go to the shop tomorrow, or even the 18th, and that SAME mince would be in their fridge. No difference imo. (the only exception for me would be if the use by date was for the 14th. I always freeze it on or before the use by date.)

I'm sure it will be fine.

oh god yes - all the time - DH works erratic hours so I never know if he's going to be home in time for dinner so am forever bunging stuff in the freezer on its best before date.

onepieceoflollipop · 15/04/2008 20:44

Oh you are all so concise in comparison to my wordy example!

ScienceTeacher · 15/04/2008 20:49

I do it all the time - well after the day of purchase too.

I always do this. I freeze any time up to the BB date on the pack.

Iota · 15/04/2008 21:37

I do this all the time too
