Salad as a side dish for beef stew

I currently have a beef stew in the slow cooker.

I am debating whether to do dumplings or mash to serve with it. I thought I would go online and see some other ideas.

I hit an American site which recommended various salads to serve.

It's not just me that finds this odd is it? Would you serve salad with a stew?

BTW any suggestions for something a bit different will be gratefully received. There is carrot in the stew and I have no baking potatoes, new potatoes, courgettes and I do have some salad which I am not serving.

When I make stew I serve it with a good sliced buttered bread for dipping (sour dough/rye/wheaten or a plain loaf) brown sauce and a nice glass of cold milk

I like salad with just about everything but not with stew. The stew would wilt the salad and the salad would interfere with the texture and heat of the stew. Any kind of potato would be my suggestion. I don't really like rice with stew much either for some reason. Or cabbage if you don't have potatoes?

We often have salad with hot dishes, including stew. That's what side plates are for.

evtheria · 02/08/2024 11:36

I don't think I'd want to eat a fresh salad with my beef stew - unless it was served separately beforehand, something about seeing the hot gloopy stew near the raw salad would put me off Blush

I do love veg sides though - buttered green beans, cauliflower cheese, etc...

SingingSands · 02/08/2024 11:47

I'd serve it with green beans with lemon, salt and olive oil. Yum.

sashh · 02/08/2024 11:59

OK I'm having dumplings and crusty bread.

Really classic to have a green salad with it in France

MrsSkylerWhite · 02/08/2024 12:03

That’s a no! Green beans and creamy mash.

I could eat a salad with anything - I like the freshness.

Is it not hot where you are today? Stew and dumplings in this weather 😱

What's wrong with stew and dumplings when the weather is hot? I don't cook any differently in the summer as I do in winter.

Doggymummar · 02/08/2024 13:19

My first thought was, in this heat! Just salad please

AnnieMcFanny · 02/08/2024 13:22

I could eat salad with stew and enjoy it because we have a salad on the table with almost every meal. I like a hot dish and a cold dish served together but my favourite would be a chilli served on top of loads of salad.

MovingToLondonSoon · 02/08/2024 13:32

I assume you have some veg of some sort in the stew itself? Maybe carrots and celery? If so, uyou could serve a salad as a first course and don't bother with extra veg for the stew. I wouldn't eat a stew and salad at the same time though, that's just weird.

Personally I'd rather have a pile of buttered cabbage and leeks or something, than the salad anyway.

showeringthisaft · 02/08/2024 13:49

No I wouldn't serve salad with stew, I'd serve veg. Although if it had veg in the stew I'd probably just serve in a bowl with some crusty bread.

Westfacing · 02/08/2024 14:26

To those saying could never have salad with a stew - do you never have things like a curry or tagine-style dish with various side dishes e.g. yoghurt, onion, chopped salad, lemon wedges etc?

Not all plonked on the your plate at the same time but just there on the table for people to help themselves.

Growlybear83 · 02/08/2024 14:27

Not if the meat dish had a sauce, no. Mind you, I don't really eat salad anyway.

AlisonWonderbra · 02/08/2024 14:28

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to serve stew with salad.

Moier · 02/08/2024 14:31

Not for me.
I love a salad.. have side salads but definitely not with stew or anything with Gravy or similar.
Mash with a stew and or with a Yorkshire pudding.
Sometimes serve in a large Yorkshire pudding.
My daughter has it on pancakes.
My sister likes a dumpling.

If it isn't, it should be

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to serve stew with salad.

If sitting next to the stew is a mound of mash or rice, could you not have a little heap of salad next to that? No sauciness next to the salad of course.

Unless the stew is some big watery thing that's all over the plate!

Us too. I don't have summer and winter food.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/08/2024 14:47

I wouldn't want on the same plate-

CarlaH · 02/08/2024 14:48

Sorry haven't RTFT but I did notice when holidaying in the US that they tend to have a bowl of salad before they eat their main meal so maybe they intend that you have the salad and then follow with the stew.

coxesorangepippin · 02/08/2024 14:55

Hmm seems odd

mindutopia · 05/08/2024 22:03

I’m American and I find this pretty gross. I don’t know any Americans who would have salad with beef stew. 😂
