Does anyone make their own mango chutney? Do you have a recipe that you can recommend?

I've been using this recipe for years https://www.daringgourmet.com/indian-mango-chutney/. It's absolutely fantastic and you'll never go back to buying it
I've only just made the latest batch, once I'm down to the last jar I start keeping my eyes peeled for cheap mangoes, you can use really, really ripe ones that they are desperate to get rid of. My last batch cost me about £5 and made enough to last us over a year. And it's so tangy. We eat it with gay abandon because it's so cheap to make your own if you can get cheap mango

This looks like a nice recipe - I like the idea of adding the nigella seeds.

I do sometimes. THis makes one jam jar, about.

2 mangoes
a 50/50 mix of vinegar and sugar
a handful of raisins and if you like spice turmeric and a bit of chili powder.

Peel one mago, chop both mangoes and put in a pan with enough of the sugar / vinegar to cover and cook slowly for hours. It will cook down and when you can draw a wooden spoon across the bottom of the pan and it stay there it is done.

Put in a clean jam jar and leave for a week before eating.

I'd like to try this.
I've got a bag of frozen mango in the freezer.
Can anyone tell me roughly how much a mango weighs without the skin & stone, please?

When I cut mine up - probably tomorrow morning - I'll weigh it & let you know.

Following for this as the DC like mango chutney but I'm trying to avoid upfs.

One large mango, peeled and stone removed, weighed 10oz. My scales are very old balance ones and I don't have metric weights, but 10oz is roughly 300g (283.5g, to be more exact)

@MissMarplesNiece Thanks very much.

There was talk of cheap mangoes upthread.

A 500g bag from Aldi is £2.50, roughly 2 whole mangoes, so probably about the same price, but always available.

MissMarplesNiece · 04/08/2024 18:24

And there'd be less waste - I should have weighed my mangoes before I peeled & stoned the, but the stones are quite large so weigh a few oz I think. The frozen mango sounds good value.

@MissMarplesNiece thank you

I only make mango chutney when I get the mangoes for less than 50p each. I am an avid yellow sticker abd bargain hunter though so know all the right places to go 😂. This time I got them from our local market clearance greengrocers where I picked up 12 massive mangoes for a fiver while I was waiting for my car to be fixed. They were a bit battered and bruised but in the chutney it doesn't matter

MissMarplesNiece · 04/08/2024 23:20

That was a good bargain Stiffy

Well I tried @StiffyByngsDogBartholomew 's recipe with a bag of frozen mango and it certainly spiced up my lunchtime chicken! I might halve the chilli next time.

This recipe is brilliant.

OP, you can get frozen mango at Farmfoods if you have one nearby.

If you like chillies I’d recommend a bit of Habanero in your chutney. Amazing flavour.
