Graters!

I hate grating cheese! It occured to me that maybe my grater is just rubbish? It is about 15 years old so probably blunt. Are the rotating ones worth it? They look great 😂 (sorry) but if they're just going to take up space maybe not?

Recommend me a grater!

I mostly buy ready grated cheese, freeze it and take it out and use as needed. I also use a kitchen machine (Ninja) for grating/chopping large amounts of vegetables for salads etc.

I do have a decent grater (Ikea bowl one) for small amounts of grating and a tiny ancient rotary one that I use for nuts and parmesan, but it clogs constantly (even using the correct grater attachment), if I use it for softer cheeses such as cheddar.

I came on to suggest the IKEA bowl one too 😁

We have the Joseph joseph one that grates into a tub and comes with a lid. Although to be honest, we usually just buy pre grated - both a waste of money and aren't as nice

Either the OXO one or....buy grated (one of my most hated things is grating cheese so I choose to pay a little extra for the luxury 🫢)

Will look up both the IKEA one and the OXO, thanks for the recommendations! I haven't bought grated cheese in years as I always thought it tasted powdery - maybe that has also come on in taste and it's worth me trying again??

I was stunned to see that ready grated cheese in Sainsbury's was cheaper per kg than the block.

My mind was blown when a friend told me this is often the case - and even more blown when she told me she freezes it in portions to stop it going mouldy (which is why I never bought it ready grated)

Ready grated cheese has additives to
stop it sticking together, this makes it less good for certain recipes and also less healthy

I recommend Microplane grater for fine grating (very sharp) plus a basic box grater for when you need bigger

Georgyporky · 08/07/2024 17:20

Ready-grated has additives, & seems powdery.

Every box grater I've ever owned went rusty around the base, so I use a Microplane grater.

GrumpyPanda · 08/07/2024 17:23

Second the microplane suggestion - mine has a finer and a rougher side, both excellent for hard cheeses.
