Would you chuck out overdue tofu and houmous?

Tofu, use by date was 9th June
Houmous 27th June

The context is that I have some form of sinusitus, had it for the past week or so, cant smell or taste so havent been eating as much but that doesnt account for the tofu, not sure how I forgot about that

Shall I freeze them for use later or just chuck them out now.

I hate any form of food waste and eat out of date food frequently but the issue is, I cannot smell anything at the moment and use this to inform my choices usually.

Tofu definitely chuck
Hummous I might be ok with but not for many more days

Jojojojojowhat · 30/06/2024 18:33

Use by - chuck. Not worth the risk.

IrritableVowel · 30/06/2024 18:34

Hummus I would eat.
Tofu I would sniff test, but if your smell isn't great, I would dump it. It's too far past its use by to risk without smelling it, I think.

LynetteScavo · 30/06/2024 18:35

Personally I'd throw them out. My DM wouldn't. As a result of being fed old food as a child I now have a very strong stomach Grin

RabbitsRock · 30/06/2024 18:35

Had to look up the spelling - hummus. I always spell it wrong.

xsquared · 30/06/2024 19:03

Hummus should be fine, but tofu will definitely taste rancid.

StormingNorman · 30/06/2024 19:11

I find hummus goes fizzy when it’s off so if it’s gone you’ll know about it.

If you’ve been unwell anyway, it’s not worth risking it.

TheOnlyMooncat · 30/06/2024 19:15

If the tofu is sealed/unopened, I'd eat it. If already opened, probably not. I've eaten unopened tofu way more out of date than that.

A real mix of views

I think the houmous usually goes all 'holey' if its too bad and it didnt look like that, so Im going to freeze that

Really dont know what to do about the tofu, its smoked if that makes any difference

I'd use both.

Moveoverdarlin · 30/06/2024 19:32

Chuck both. Hummus goes rank after a few days IMO.

Tinytigertail · 30/06/2024 19:34

You will know with the hummus, the lid might start bulging and it will have a 'fizzy' taste. Tofu, I would bin for sure.

soupfiend · 30/06/2024 19:35

Right the houmous is in the freezer, I meant to do this when I bought it to be honest but forgot

Now, I have a gamble with the tofu, I have no guarantee of when my smell and taste come back, it goes for weeks at a time, or it might come back tomorrow, who knows. So do I just freeze it and if its rank once I can tell, thats that, or wait, or just chuck it
Perhaps just freeze it and see?

If the tofu is still sealed and has been in the fridge I'd be OK with that. I've bought pre-packed tofu with really long shelf live before which indicates it has a long life between when it's manufactured and the use by date and by that logic, it doesn't go 'off' quickly.

If it's open, the longer it's been open for and the warmer the temperature it's been at, the more likely that it will have deteriorated and the higher the risk of mould/ bacteria growing.

soupfiend · 26/07/2024 19:34

Ok, Im coming back to update that tonight I have finally opened the tofu

Its a smoked tofu so it might be that any bad smell or taste is being disguised

I am now eating it. Half went in the freezer

If you dont hear from me tomorrow, it has killed me.

Tofu generally has a best before date rather than a use by date. Unopened it’s fine way beyond the best before date. I generally assume any that I find lurking at the back of my fridge will be fine as long as the date is broadly within living memory.

Im still here!!!

Success!
