Breakfast in hotels

If there is cold buffet, plus a menu of freshly prepared dishes from the kitchen, what do you choose to eat generally and in what order?

Are you supposed to have both options? Just one 🤷🏼‍♀️? I never know what is the right thing to do.

I would have fruit juice, fruit, yogurt etc from the buffet then order my cooked breakfast from the menu.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 20/06/2024 18:00

I have both

FunLurker · 20/06/2024 18:00

If cold buffet its normally continental and hot buffet is full English. You only eat cold if ordering continental but eat anything if full.
Our kids start with ceral and older ones fruit, then they have hot food. I normally have a slice of toast, then eat hot, then I have some fruit. Mu DH has a pastry, then full, then cheese and crackers and if he can fit it in fruit.

CoastalCalm · 20/06/2024 18:00

Fruit juice , fruit and pastries then a pared down English breakfast

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 20/06/2024 18:02

I love a hotel breakfast. I always start with coffee, and a pastry or two. Then fruit, then hot stuff. Then maybe yogurt and more fruit. Another coffee along the way.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/06/2024 18:02

I choose one or the other.

sprigatito · 20/06/2024 18:03

My usual procedure is to eat far too much bacon (seriously, far too much), scrambled egg if it looks nice and a sausage or two if they aren't cheap spammy ones. Then toast and jam. Then yoghurt with whatever fruit/berries are available. I only eat hotel breakfasts about twice a year so I make it count.

Sometimesright · 20/06/2024 18:07

I have exactly what I want and if it’s cake then so be it. That’s the best part for me. I love a breakfast but not so much the cooked stuff but the pastries toast lovely fruit etc I’m all over it 😜 juices and coffee too. Now I can’t wait to go away 😂🤣

mamaduckbone · 20/06/2024 18:10

I would start with fruit, yoghurt etc, then go hot, with possibly a pastry chaser if they look good. 3 course breakfast with the cooked part as the main course.
I never bother with toast - it's a waste to get full up on bread.

ginasevern · 20/06/2024 18:31

I'll eat the lot. I start with some cereal then get some fruit, after that I'll have a pastry or yoghurt. Then I'll order, or help myself, to the cooked stuff and put some toast in the toaster. I may then even go back for another nibble on something else.

I love hotel breakfasts and consider it a real treat. I don't care what anyone else thinks but honestly nobody takes any notice.

Many hotels allow you to have everything but some limit it to continental or cooked. Check with the hotel. Worst case scenario is that you end up paying for both if it is an either or situation.

DoYouSmokePaul · 20/06/2024 18:35

Start with coffee and toast with Nutella. Then another coffee and some Rice Krispies. Then fruit juice and omelette or scrambled egg and sausage. If still hungry will have yoghurt/fruit and maybe a pastry.
Then another coffee 😃

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 20/06/2024 18:39

Looks like anything goes then 😄 I’ve got a couple of nights in a very posh London hotel coming up, breakfast included, and I didn’t want to show myself up 😊

OP posts:
Dartmoorcheffy · 20/06/2024 18:43

Just ask the server what is included and they will tell you. Some places will have a buffet of cold items which you help yourself too and a menu for you to order hot freshly cooked items from. All places run differently so nobody will bat an eyelid at you asking how they work.

TiddlyCove · 20/06/2024 18:49

I'm not used to eating breakfast so I normally just have some baked beans and a croissant.

(Not a 'competitive under eating comment, I more than make up for lack of breakfast later on in the day.)

BasiliskStare · 20/06/2024 18:52

Nice hotel I ordered off the menu and then anything from buffet included also - as @Dartmoorcheffy said just ask the server When in an hotel I tend to eat a v big breakfast

Savoydone · 20/06/2024 19:30

@TiddlyCove I don’t eat until lunchtime. Again, make up for it later in the day.
But when I’m in a hotel I eat hot breakfast, pastries and my own body weight in toast 😂

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 20/06/2024 19:34

Oh this reminds me of a hotel in Lanzarote where DH had a sensible option and I turned up at our table with a Bloody Mary and a plate of jelly sweets.

Hotel breakfast buffets are a wonderful free for all. In your shoes I'd do a cold plate whilst waiting for my cooked breakfast. Mmmm.

DappledThings · 20/06/2024 19:40

Hotel buffet breakfasts are the best. Especially if it's entirely a buffet and in a foreign country with various cuisines.

Last one I had I had dumplings, spicy noodles, omelette, sauerkraut, green beans, yoghurt, fruit and a small pastry. Not all on the same plate but all in one breakfast.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 20/06/2024 19:43

Fresh fruit to start with, ideally pineapple, mango, papaya, berries.
Then hot, ideally eggs royale or full English or an omelette from the omelette station.
Finish with either a pain au chocolat or waffles/ churros with Nutella.
Then don’t eat lunch!

TheZenOne22 · 20/06/2024 19:47

I love a hotel breakfast - I will usually start with a juice and a cooked breakfast, then have some bread, cheese and fruit or a yoghurt.

One time I was at a work event and one of the managers came and joined my table and all she had was some porridge and a coffee!

For me, it's as if my stomach is dormant until 11am, and all at once I'm ravenous and remain so for the rest of the day. I'd be OK if hotels served breakfast till midday.

MissingMoominMamma · 20/06/2024 19:54

The last time we stayed in an hotel, I started with fresh fruit and champagne 😋, then had omelette. Every day!

DH has cereal, a few hot items, then toast and marmalade with extra tea.

AliceMcK · 20/06/2024 19:58

Anything and everything. Love a good hotel breakfast. If it’s freshly served hot food I tend to go for the lot, but if the hot food is buffet style I’m selective as too many stomach upsets in the past. I always leave the danishes for last, I don’t indulge in danishes often so this is my favourite part. Lots of fresh juice and lovely pot of tea. I’m done for the day.

What was this hotel???😂😂

Mitsky · 20/06/2024 20:13

We’ve just come back from a very nice hotel in Italy and went wild on the buffet every morning.

  • normally start with a croissant and jam / butter with a tea or coffee
  • fresh fruit and fruit juice (ya know, for the health benefits)
  • crepes
  • Light savoury (they had amazing fresh tomato on bread)
  • another crepe for good luck
