Hello

I am one of those ones who is not confident in the kitchen. If I cook a roast chicken how many days is it safe in the fridge ? If I cook it on a Monday will it do dinner Monday, Tuesday and be OK for eating Wednesday too ? Same question for cooked mince of any kind and what about grains like quinoa/rice/ potatoes even ...

Also any ideas of storage containers that are best too please. Thank you.

When I worked in a cafe many years ago the rule for pretty much everything was 3 days in the fridge. At home I tend to go by the "does it look/smell ok?" rule, and it usually seems fine beyond 3 days, but if you're not confident with that then I'd say 3 days is fine.

Chicken and cold meats are fine on day 3, ham will keep longer. I always remove all bones, don’t know really if this makes a difference but my Nan did so I do 😂

I often will have a roast joint/chicken on the Sunday then cold on Monday but fed up with it by Tuesday so I often freeze any on the Monday normally the not so good cuts then use to make a meal Thursday/friday.

im I bit funny about pulses and like to use them on the second day rice and pasta the same

cheese/milk/butter all freeze well too

potatoes freeze if cooked, mask or part cooked roasts or jackets all freeze well, in the fridge I often cook extra day 1 and fry the next into bubble and squeak of slices of jacket or new boiled fried in a little oil with a nob of butter. Don’t forget if you do a roast, it’s worth cooking extra potatoes and veg and then roughly mash to make bubble squeak the next day, with cold meat or add chopped to fry with veg.

cooked mince, bulk cook for Spag bol and freeze is fine over night in fridge ok too. You can add beans and chilli or taco seasoning to change it up

Yes, I'd say as a rule, cooked meats of any sort are fine in the fridge for 3 days. Veggies that are cooked similar, but to be honest, they get icky and less nice so I'd aim for cooking veg fresh as much as possible.

Potatoes are great left in the fridge and reheated as it increases resistant starch which is great for blood sugar and helps with weight loss.

I would be wary of leaving mince more than a couple of days as the greater surface area means more bacteria.

Other meat should be fine though for 5 or so days in the fridge.

I would eat it more than 3 days but I also freeze absolutely anything and everything. things that most people would say you cant or shouldnt freeze

@soupfiend any particularly surprising success stories with the freezing? I always find myself wondering if I can freeze things or not! (Sorry to hijack the thread, OP!)

Well, only that nothing curdled the way people thought it might

So coconut milk, yoghurt, milk, cheese, houmous, chickpeas, tons more
