Cake flavour quandary!

Suggestions please:
I'm making a large, tiered cake for an event and need help deciding on what cakes/flavours to make. Needs to have broad appeal. Not chocolate or fruit (as in dried fruit), but lemon would be nice for one of the cakes. I'm thinking Madeira type sponge would be more robust and better lasting than a Victoria sponge. The cakes will be crumb coated with buttercream, also used in the filling, covered with fondant and decorated. I plan to make ahead and freeze the cakes so it's just an assembly job the day before the event.

IMO lemon is always a winner. If I CBA to grate loads of lemons for peel I use lemon essence from Lakeland.

I do lemon, carrot and either chocolate or coffee for broad appeal when I make cakes like this.

Coffee would be my choice but I know it doesn't appeal to everyone so I would stay safe with orange and lemon.(st clements)

I would go for maderia that would be perfect a nice tangy lemon for offsetting the sweetness of the icing and yes i would go for carrot my daughter did this combination for a cake and it was delicious

lemon and elderflower would be lovely for this time of year

Thank you all, I think lemon for the largest tier is a winner.

I'm still undecided about the flavour for the top tier though so any more ideas?

I'm thinking strawberries in some guise for the top tier. Obviously that could strawberry jam filling, but does anyone have any ideas for something other than a vanilla sponge with a strawberry filling please?

Just coming back to say I'm using freeze dried strawberry powder in the top tier. With strawberry jam and Swiss buttercream filling it should be good. Fingers crossed.

Sounds delicious. Please post a picture of the finished cake.

I'm not going to post a picture as the decoration of the cakes was unique and the person it was for us on here! But I was really pleased with the outcome. I used sugar syrup on the cakes when assembling them as I was concerned they were a bit overbaked. The lemon was the best. The strawberry flavour was subtle, shall we say. If I did it again, I'd probably add some natural flavouring.

Best thing was the person they were for was bowled over!
