Planning a fancy afternoon tea. Have I thought of everything?

Long table with white tablecloth and napkins.
Tea set - pretty cups and saucers , plates, cake forks, tiered platters, teapots etc
2 types of sandwich - tomato, and cucumber
Little cakes, pastries, and patisserie etc - all ordered
Cheeseboard (not traditional, but cheese is the birthday person's favourite)
Main birthday cake (making myself)
Candles
2 x champagne in ice buckets (don't think people will drink - it's more of a token, but there's extra Brut in the fridge if needed)
Soft drink (making a cran / lime / soda mix)
Water
Balloons
Enough chairs round the table
Background music

Is that it?

Scones. Different sandwiches . Would be disappointed

Arrestedforit · 03/05/2024 19:37

You must have scones, clotted cream and premium strawberry jam, otherwise I’m not coming. Also smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwiches on brown thin sliced bread.

Arrestedforit · 03/05/2024 19:38

If you’re veggie, cream cheese, cucumber and dill sandwiches

DidSomebodySayEnnui · 03/05/2024 19:38

Flowers for the table too please

GerbilStyle · 03/05/2024 19:38

Scones jam cream and much more sandwich variety. Extra points if they're cut into fingers. Also gluten free options please. And oats can be a problem for coeliacs

This sounds so lovely
But where are the scones with cream and Jam?

Mushroomwithaview · 03/05/2024 19:39

Haha. Oh Mumsnet never change.

Righty. Shit sandwiches. What an absolute arse I am to have planned such shit sandwiches.
I'm doing the flavours that the birthday girl likes.
I like tomato sandwiches too.
What would you suggest? No meat or fish.

Yes, scones, will add.

Scones definitely conventional for Afternoon Tea.

if birthday person/guests not vegan, then smoked salmon/cucumber or egg mayo sandwiches too?

However, there does sound like there is lots of lovely stuff regardless

Jennalong · 03/05/2024 19:41

Little pieces of quiche .
Had a small cup of soup once with an afternoon tea , it made a nice change.
Yes to flowers
Yes to scones.

WillYouPutYourCoatOn · 03/05/2024 19:41

I think, you think that tomato or cucumber sandwiches sound terribly naice. This went out in the seventies.

You need good flavours, in fine finger sandwiches. Good ham and picalilli. Smoked salmon and cream cheese. Tomato and basil salsa with mozzarella. Egg and watercress.

And whilst balloons are nice, it's not really an afternoon tea thing. Flowers more so. Bunting could work.

Mushroomwithaview · 03/05/2024 19:41

Sandwiches:

  1. cream cheese, cucumber and dill
  2. tomato and black pepper (family tradition, we're having them)
  3. egg mayo

Plus scones
Yes, fresh flowers on the table

Cucumber sandwiches are spot on, add horse radish butter or similar. Plain tomato sandwiches sound sad.

Some sort of scone is traditional, cheese, fruit or plain, you can make them small.

Totally get the cheeseboard thing, aim for 4 or 5 mini courses.

BreakfastAtMimis · 03/05/2024 19:42

You need a wider choice of soft drinks, not just one random mix.
Egg sandwiches. Cheese and coleslaw. Cheese and tomato.

HappyAsASandboy · 03/05/2024 19:43

If no meat or fish, then cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches and tomato sandwiches if that's what you like (Envy).

Scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

Something chocolatey in the cakes/pastries.

More champagne than you'd think!

PointyMcguire · 03/05/2024 19:43

Do all the other guests have the same dietary preferences? If not I think they might be disappointed with no meat/fish options.

With these additions, I want to join! Sounds fab.

UnpickThePockets · 03/05/2024 19:44

Ignore the Naysayers OP, sounds lovely. Sandwich choices (am assuming Good Butter and VERY IMPORTANTLY unrefrigerated tomatoes) sound delicate and fresh.

If I were being picky, I’d add a smoked salmon sandwich to the cucumber and tomato (on brown bread). Agree with the addition of scones.

edit: cross posted. Egg addition works a treat.

Edited

They'll just have to knock over the chairs and storm out I'm afraid.
