Can you still get long life bacon/potato saute anywhere?

You used to be able to buy a long life pouch of bacon, sliced potato and possibly egg that was a student staple and great for camping. I remember it being available in Sainsburys and possibly M&S - called something like farmhouse brunch or breakfast saute. I think there might also have been a corned beef hash version too.

It came in a flat vacuum packed silver pouch that was in a box with a photo of lovely browned sliced potatoes, crispy bits of bacon that didn’t really reflect reality but all the same, it was useful, filling and easy to store.

I can’t find it anywhere and it would be perfect for my son’s DofE expedition.

Has anyone seen anything like this anywhere recently?

You can get it in Lidl during Swiss week - sometimes they have it left over on the randoms shelf a couple of weeks later. I stash the plain one 😉

Oh wow, that’s great info. Thanks @PauliesWalnuts .

How often do Lidl do Swiss week?

That sounds like military ration packs. I’ve not seen them in a supermarket but they're easily available online. You’ll find a lot expedition suppliers and preppers.

You can always get it in Aldi, in the chiller section.

I think the Sainsbury’s one was called bacon brunch last time I got it.

Yes that’s exactly what it was like, but long life and sold with all the canned meat.

Thanks!

Definitely the Aldi version - it's sold year round. It nor ally has a best before date of a month or two so does last a long time.

Eve · 21/04/2024 14:59

I know exactly what you mean, it was in a slim black box - used to take it away in horsebox when at events.

sadly not been able to find it for a few years now.

MassiveOvaryaction · 21/04/2024 15:42

Dh got some from Home Bargains or B&M (sorry can't remember which) relatively recently for a camping trip.

murasaki · 21/04/2024 15:47

I was going to say aldi. In fact you've inspired me to go and get some.

LIZS · 21/04/2024 15:53

Think Waitrose do one.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 21/04/2024 16:23

I used to love this. Haven’t seen it for years. 😢

Butterchunks · 21/04/2024 16:25

Try home bargains, I regularly see it there

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 21/04/2024 16:27

Yes, I got some in Home Bargains a few weeks ago - major comfort food for DH who remembers it fondly from DofE hikes and the like

Theraffarian · 21/04/2024 16:27

Home Bargains sell it here too , Longlife with the pasta and noodle aisle items .

Blackcats7 · 21/04/2024 16:35

Waitrose used to sell it

ohtowinthelottery · 21/04/2024 16:43

I buy it in Home Bargains and sometimes Lidl have it. We usually get it for camping trips.

SauvignonBlanche · 21/04/2024 16:47

I know what you mean - it’s vanished!

Waitrose did one but that’s gone too.

The Aldi one is the nearest but requires refrigeration and isn’t as long-lasting.

Mumsntfan1 · 21/04/2024 17:17

Any supermarket in Germany if you happen to visit any time!

idontlikealdi · 21/04/2024 17:45

Sainsbury's.

StrawberryPavlova · 21/04/2024 18:26

It was a Sainsbury's own brand thing, the one I remember. It was amazing, I lived on them as a teen/student Grin

PauliesWalnuts · 22/04/2024 10:23

@DinkleDoo feels like every couple of months. Apparently it’s Greek week next week. Keep a look out in their online magazine - they publicise them in there.

DinkleDoo · 22/04/2024 10:38

Amazing - thanks everyone, I will take a look in homebargains and have subscribed to the Lidl newsletter.

This has been driving me nuts for the past year or so. I used to buy both the Sainsbury's one, and the Waitrose one. I did stock up just before it disappeared from Waitrose as it was on offer, but I've only got a couple left.

I've planned a trip to Home Bargains now.

I've been eating the Sainsbury's one since the 90's, was absolutely gutted it was discontinued for some reason, no one ever seemed to know it existed, so I'm glad others found it tasty too. I'm really craving it today, the Aldi one looks more fried than soft, sauted potatoes though? I'm debating a trip, but I don't know if they will satisfy my urge.
