What veggie food does your child like? (That isn’t pizza or pasta?)

It doesn’t have to be complicated. But what vegetarian food will your child eat happily that isn’t pizza or pasta?

DS (12) wants to go veggie. Easy in a way as I am already veggie. But tricky also as he doesn’t like tofu, dhal etc.

So I’d love some tips!

Even if it’s something incredibly simple!

Mixed bean and root veg casserole with vegetarian sausages.

Ratatouille topped with cheese, or served with rice, or served with sausages.

Toad in the hole with onion gravy.

Risotto .

Vegetarian moussaka made with lentils, in fact anything with aubergines eg Pasta Norma.

Mine does really love tofu! But aside from that:

Paneer biryani
Broccoli and blue cheese baked gnocchi
Vegetable and egg fried rice (we put tofu in it, you wouldn’t need to)
Sesame noodles with chargrilled vegetables (and grilled sesame tofu, but again you could leave out)
Vegetable curries (korma, Thai curry)
Pad thai
Soy chilli con carne
Bean and cheese burritos/quesadillas
Nachos
Veggie sausages with mash and vegetables
Risotto (he’s not a big mushroom fan, so we tend to do a primavera risotto with asparagus, peas etc).
Mezze - grilled halloumi, hummus, spanakopita, pitta, tabouleh, baba ghanoush
Anything with baked beans and cheese - baked potatoes, toasties, or just on toast.

We also eat lots of different types of pasta! Stuffed pasta, spinach and ricotta cannelloni, pasta with pesto and peas. Not just tomato pasta.

Curry, chilli, fajitas, leek and butterbean bake, sausage casserole, fondue, raclette... bosh do an amazing vegan carbonara, but mine also like veggie bacon, sausages etc.

I am veggie. Kids are not. Not sure why veggie substitutes are so attractive. They regularly request a big chunk of my dinner!

How about smoked tofu fajitas? With all the toppings?? That's the only veggie thing I can get away with in our carnivorous household!

Some things I loved as a Veggie child (and still love as a non Veggie adult)

vegetable cobbler - mixed veggies of choice in a tomato sauce topped with cheese scones

black eyed bean and leek hash - a tin of black eyed beans, sliced leeks and cubed par boiled potatoes fried in a frying pan til crispy then with grated cheese melted over it to hold it together.

homity pie

Bean chilli and we often make this creamy lentil soup, which is my 11 year old's favourite meal (not a vegetarian).

I was a vegetarian at that age and I made a lot of bean and veg fajitas. As well as cheese or cheese/bean or cheese/veg quesadillas.

Black beans and quesadillas, falafel, crispy chickpeas, tempura. I hate fake meats but find the fake chicken (this isn’t chicken), home made bean burgers, risotto and Aranchini, stuffed peppers, fake sausages.
we used to pick up recipe magazines in the supermarkets and flick through and buy one if my DD liked a few receipes. Meant she had buy in.

Penguinsa · 22/04/2024 11:09

I have a veggie DD who loves pizza and pasta - other things she will eat are jacket potatoes with beans and cheese, veggie fajitas, Vegetable korma, roast dinner, ratatouille, potato and brocolli bake, veg chow mein and veg spring rolls. She also does a lot of her own cooking though older at 18.
