Dark chocolate brand recommendations

Anyone have good dark chocolate recommendations? Particularly for 85% and above? I’m interested in both high end but mainly affordable as I like to have a square or two every day.

I like Lindt, Green and Blacks and Montezuma - it’s gone up in price recently though.

I tried Willie’s Cacao drops recently when it was on offer and they were amazing.

High end - I love Venchi. I tried Neuhaus at Christmas which were great but very expensive.

Affordable - Aldi Moser Roth? Any other recommendations please?

Thanks!

Lidl. Although they haven't had the 85% the last couple of times I've been in.

My husband got me some 100% chocolate once, which was amazing, unfortunately we can't remember the make

These are really good.

Original Beans, and FireTree are both excellent, but pricey. Their 100% bars are v good.

pump street chocolate is excellent!

Valor of you can get hold of it. It's 'the' Spanish brand but you do see it in the uk in smaller, shops and delis and online.

Lidl or M&S are both good and they do a high cocoa content up to 100% 😃

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 19/04/2024 13:05

Highly recommend ‘Bare bones’ although not sure it goes above 70%.
Firetree for a treat.

Boiledeggandtoast · 19/04/2024 13:14

Another vote for Lidl. I particularly like their J D Gross Madagascan (but it's only 70%).

darkchocolatecoffee · 19/04/2024 15:03

Thanks everyone- I’ll check these out.

Firetree I tried last years and the 100% I found too bitter but now I’ve acclimatised to darker chocolate since, I’ll give it another go.

@LipstickedPowderedAndPainted thanks I’m going to Valencia in summer so I’ll check in the supermarkets for Valor brand.

@darkchocolatecoffee well if you can find an actual Valor shop, I would say it would be remiss not to stop by and enjoy a plate of their churros con chocolate ( cup of thick warm chocolate for dipping), whilst sitting out in the warm whilst consudering their range for purchase!!!
Looking at your username I can Confirm that generally as a chain their coffee is usually decent- spanish coffee can be hit and miss.

Try and find a Cafe Asiatico in a bar if you love coffee and also don't mind a drop of alcohol in the local area too. To me it is the drink of the gods😍😍😍

Believe it or not, Waitrose 82% Peru.

And I have tried plenty.

darkchocolatecoffee · 19/04/2024 15:20

Thanks so much for the recommendation @LipstickedPowderedAndPainted ! I’ve found a Valor shop 10 mins from where we will be staying so needless to say we’ll be going there each day of our stay! And yes I’ll definitely try the coffee there then.

I’m not sure if I found the correct Cafe Asiatico on Google - is it an Asian restaurant?

yes! I’ve currently got a bar of the Waitrose No 1 Madagascar 75% (I don’t usually go as low as this) and really enjoying it - will try the 82% next

@darkchocolatecoffee
No not an Asian restaurant.

Many, but not all local bars in the region will be able to prepare the drink( and some restaurants).
It may sound revolting, its an odd description, but in my opinion, it is something from heaven. It is a coffee.
Made with a local liquor called liquor 43 made near the Cartagena south of valencia. It has a measure of condensed milk in the bottom (instead of cream and sugar, as perhaps a traditional Irish style, coffee would have to us and you stir it before drinking). So it appears as 3 or sometimes 4 layers striped in a glass). A bonbon coffee is the same without the alcohol (you need to try the alcohol version!!😁)

darkchocolatecoffee · 19/04/2024 15:50

That sounds incredible @LipstickedPowderedAndPainted I love condensed milk in coffee like in Vietnamese style, so I’ll see if I can find it in the local area!

Update on this - last week I tried the Lidl JD Gross brand of the 85% - really good (better than Aldi Moser Roth in my opinion).

going to buy the ‘bare bones’ one next as a treat

Agree the Lidl Madagascan bar is better than any other dark chocolate I have tried (and in lockdown I was ordering bars from super expensive niche chocolatiers).

I go there and grab handfuls of them when I'm in. Absolutely delicious.
