Catering for vegetarians at large party

SevenKingsMustDie · 28/03/2024 06:47

DH is turning 40 this summer and we are having a party in the garden (as long is the weather is ok!).

We DO NOT want to be tied down to a BBQ and not be able to mingle, so I am buying a heap of bread rolls, and making slow cooked beef, pulled chicken and pulled pork for people to fill the rolls, with sauces and 'naice' salads.

Am looking for suggestions for a veggie alternative - needs to be ok being kept warm in a chafing dish for a while...

TIA for your ideas!

Vegetable curry
Quorn chilli
Vegetarian sausage casserole
Ratatouille

I'm a life long veggie, and at an event like this I would be happy with the salad and rolls and some deli bits. I know you aren't bbqing, but my ils always make me veggie kebabs with peppers, mushrooms, corgettes at family bbqs, which i love. Alternatively you could get some nice deli samosas or pastries (not supermarket ones!). I wouldn't be bothered about vegetarian fake meat alteratives as such.
Pp suggested Jack Fruit - be careful with that, I've never eaten it as it looks revolting (it looks like meat).

BarrelOfOtters · 28/03/2024 06:59

If veggie not vegan then cheese and salads? And or frittata.

Plump82 · 28/03/2024 07:02

Pulled jackfruit is great but a total faff fo make. I agree with PP as a vegetarian I'd be happy with salad, rolls, bits and pieces. Samosas etc sound good.

I'm also going to say what a lot of people hate vegetarians saying but meat eaters will probably eat the vegetarian stuff too so make sure you have plenty for everyone!

jamaisjedors · 28/03/2024 07:30

I always do a vegetarian pulled pork with mushrooms when I do this kind of meal. Super easy, just roast the mushrooms with some spices and then put them in some bbq sauce.

Doingmybest12 · 28/03/2024 07:35

Chargrilled vegetables like peppers, big mushrooms, aubergines. Large pieces to choose from.

Grumpynan · 28/03/2024 07:58

As a vegetarian. Jackfruit is 🤮.

I’m not a fan of meat substitute but Linda McCartney do a pulled duck which is good, or the quorn mince into a big chilli with the the rolls

personally I would go for a chilli with lots of beans in or a quiche with salads. A pasta or rice dish with beans is great for everyone

Deathraystare · 28/03/2024 12:02

Probably sensible not to actually bbq on the barbie because no vegetarian was a veggie burger nestling in with the beef ones! I have had to put up with that - they just don't get it!!! Same with bbq'd Halloumi. Delicious but not in meat burger juices! The veggie chilli and veggie sausage thing sounds great.

Not this everyone. I avoid carbs and am allergic to tomateos/nightshades.

Not all veggies eat everything. I can’t bear anything trying to replicate meat.

A simple fritata with oven roasted/bbqed veg and a selection of cheeses would be awesome.

Veggie sausages

halloumi slices

mixed roast veg

Illpickthatup · 28/03/2024 12:11

I've made a sort of pulled pork with Portobello mushrooms before. Delicious!

For sides, corn on the cobs, coleslaw, potato salad. You can use vegan mayo if you have any vegans coming. All flora spreads are vegan too.

PossumintheHouse · 28/03/2024 12:13

Chargrilled veg/a vegetarian maze would go down a treat. Also, how about making a big pot of a vegetarian curry/a vegetarian chilli? There's loads of yummy curry recipes online and a veggie chilli could make some nice sloppy joes with the rolls.

Definitelylivedin · 28/03/2024 12:16

Roasted peppers would be good. As would the Ottolenghi tandoori chic peas. But make plenty as meat eater will eat them too.

DahliaMacNamara · 28/03/2024 12:17

Just have plenty of normal stuff that's not meat or fish. No need to overthink it.
Vegetable quiches, pizzas, salads, spring rolls, bhajis, samosas, falafels, roasted vegetables. Things every guest will recognise.

OMGitsnotgood · 28/03/2024 12:20

I'm not vegetarian but absolutely love these mushrooms, can be prepped ahead, don't take long at all.

I know you said you wanted warm roll fillings but you could consider doing a cold option: coronation chicken and coronation chickpeas. Both delicious and quick and easy. With chickpeas being so cheap you can make more than enough for all guests.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 28/03/2024 12:21

A big tub of houmous, and some quiches.
definitely the meat eaters will eat it!

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 28/03/2024 12:22

Things to fill rolls and wraps with:
Felafels and hummus
veg sausages
roasted cauliflower slices
Big mushrooms roasted

Axx · 28/03/2024 12:23

Chargrilled veg and humous

Halloumi and mushroom

Edited

Flora buttery isn’t.

if you’re feeling lazy M&S do veggie sandwich/wrap platters which are amazing.

We do bbq pulled jackfruit often, the only issue we've had is when meat eaters have eaten it all and there wasn't enough for the veggies and I ended up having to do a couple of frozen pizzas.
Veggie chilli, or sausage casserole are other slow cooker favourites of ours. I wouldn't eat either in a bread roll, but put out some bowls and tortilla chips and that'll work.
I tend to do all veggie sides too: hummus, guac, olives, falafel, chickpea salad, couscous. All can be prepared in advance or bought pre made.

Overthebow · 28/03/2024 12:28

Instead of beef, pork and chicken you could do two, then do a meat alternative fajita mix for a 3rd option and then a big tray of roasted veg. The toast veg could be for everyone.

NameChangedAgainn · 28/03/2024 12:31

This is the jackfruit recipe I use. Some recipes are ridiculously long. I follow this recipe up until all the ingredients are added (about ten minutes in) and then throw it in the slow cooker to finish off/keep warm.

BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches

These BBQ jackfruit sandwiches are loaded with BBQ flavor and the texture of shredded jackfruit makes for an amazing shredded meat substitute.

Can I just add, that whatever you make for the vegetarians, the meat eaters will eat it too, so make plenty! I've been at parties where the vegetarian options ran out and we didn't have enough to eat.
