Are these Mussels safe to eat?

I bought some chilled mussels in garlic butter (in a vacuum pouch) yesterday from Waitrose. Not reading the packet first, I put them in the freezer. I've just read that they were previously frozen prior to chilling and to not re-freeze them.

Would you eat them?

I think you're not supposed to refreeze because it changes the texture. It's probably safe to eat.

Tootiredtogaf · 21/03/2024 14:11

Absolutely not.

Personally I wouldn't eat. You can't freeze something previously frozen unless it was raw, frozen, cooked then frozen.

Depends - if they were in chillers when you bought then its a NO but if they were frozen when bought and then chucked back into freezer at home its a YES.

As long as you didn't let them get up to room temperature, they will be fine, especially if you cook them straight from frozen.

I think I better play safe and chick them. They say don't refreeze.

Freezing will alter the texture, but I'd still eat them.

I’m allergic to all bivalve molluscs of which Mussels are one of that family so can tell you from personal experience that they taste absolutely awful coming back up!

Ladyprehensile · 21/03/2024 19:34

Yeh, I’d eat them.
Texture might be a bit tough but that’s all.
Half the time the don’t re-freeze advice us based on the quality of the product after thawing.
Cook thoroughly.
