not made the dal recipe that PP shared, but I have made many from the "hoe to make the perfect...' series from Felicity and I really rate it.

this is a different dal recipe by Meera that I love.

Quick Coconut Dal with Tomato Sambol

This dal by Meera Sodha is a great one to keep in your back pocket for when time and energy are running low in the kitchen. It needs only 5 mins or so hands-on work before heat, time and the ingredients take care of the rest.

This is a recipe I found on Facebook....mine is loosely based on this but I use butternut rather than sweet potato, and roast it in cubes first until tender (I do mine in air fryer). I also don't use nooch as I hadn't got any but I add a good dose of chopped coriander. Lovely and doesn't require much faff.

This slow cooker recipe is a doddle. Just chuck it all in and leave it - turns out delicious: https://www.tamingtwins.com/slow-cooker-dahl/

I also love this dal makhani. It's a Dishoom recipe adapted for the slow cooker. Tastes exactly the same as in the restaurant! https://www.happyveggiekitchen.com/dishoom-dal-in-the-slow-cooker/

Red Lentil Dahl {Slow Cooker Fakeaways}

If you’re looking for an easy vegetarian curry as this week’s fakeaway, try this delicious and simple Slow Cooker Dahl.

In the UK, when people say 'dal' they tend to mean a yellow dal, often called a tadka dal, but there are lots of types of dals.

A rajma dal makes a nice change and is a bit more like a 'chilli' - https://www.cookwithmanali.com/rajma-masala/

Urad dal (black dal) is also nice. The dishoom recipe is very good and you can find urad dal in most bigger supermarkets than have a good Asian section.

Rajma Masala - Kidney Beans Curry

Rajma Masala is one of the most popular Indian curry where kidney beans are cooked with onions, tomatoes and spices!

I suggest you have a look at Chetna Makan on YouTube. She has a lot of amazing dal recipes.

Rukmini Iyer has a really easy one pan dhal with coconut and lime cooked in the oven. Might not be truly authentic, but it is delicious and no faff.

Dahl

See this looks like the simplest of them all to me - apart from 300g tinned tomatoes... What? You're having 400 and that's that!

Going to try this, this week - thank you!
P. S no cloves, no peppercorns 🤣

Sauté an onion, add a finely chopped fresh chilli (or dried) 2 cloves garlic finely chopped, a thumb sized piece of ginger finely chopped or grated, a tsp turmeric a tbsp mixed curry powder 100g lentils, pint veg stock and 50g creamed coconut. Cook until soft approx 20 minutes, add chopped coriander or curry leaves if desired

You can substitute the fresh garlic and ginger for frozen if preferred

I use a thermomix and make tomato and lentil dahl.
it has red lentils, coconut milk, fresh tomatoes, garam masala, tumeric, fresh grinded cumin and mustard seeds, and grated carrot, ginger and garlic. Oh and salt. It’s a great dish nice and filling. We have it on its own with rice. Last night I cooked butter chicken and we had it with the leftover dahl.

Mine is probably too simple but I make it all the time. Instant pot for this and rice cooker for the rice make it a super easy dinner I can make while wfh.

sauté onion
add chopped garlic, ginger, chili
add spice - mild curry powder if really pushed, sometimes wodges of turmeric, cumin, Garam masala
salt
1.5 cups red lentils
sometimes dried or creamed coconut, chopped sweet potato and or squash
3 or 4 cups water
squidge of tomato purée

simmer for a bit (25 mins?) while stirring occasionally, or pressure cook for 10 mins

sometimes cool it down with a couple of cubes of frozen spinach.

vv well received by the masses and becomes something you can just make without thinking.

The Taming Twins slow cooker recipe linked above is gorgeous.

I add spinach, cherry tomatoes and green beans to it and serve it with salmon or paneer and garlic naan 😋

Well I didn't notice but I like your style 😂

Skyellaskerry · 12/03/2024 23:10

One where you fry cumin seeds, garlic, paprika, sugar in oil and then tip that onto the cooked dhal … makes a very satisfying sizzle!

TheLadyIsAVamp · 12/03/2024 23:14

I love this one.
