I probably would. How long did it have left on its' shelf life when it went into the freezer?

Sniff it.

ScottBakula · 28/02/2024 19:36

Yep .

I had chicken that defrosted Friday night / Saturday morning for lunch today

Willmafrockfit · 28/02/2024 19:37

no,
i bet it smells
otoh it is smoked
would you cook it?

Rosesanddaisies1 · 28/02/2024 19:38

Yes I would

Dacadactyl · 28/02/2024 19:38

It would depend entirely on how long it had left on the date when it went in the freezer.

If it had a week left on it when it went in the freezer, I'd eat it for up to a week after defrosting.

Willnoonethinkofthebirds · 28/02/2024 19:39

Yes. Smoked fish can easily last a week beyond it's use by date and be fine. I would think nothing of eating it.

PlantDoctor · 28/02/2024 19:46

Was the packet open? It usually says once open to use within a day, so I would have used the day of defrosting. I may err on the side of caution but I never get food poisoning.

Hatty65 · 28/02/2024 19:51

Yes. It's smoked. It's fine.

Lurkingandlearning · 28/02/2024 20:06

I wouldn’t if it smells very fishy and definitely not if you get a whiff of ammonia. I thought I’d noticed that, but wasn’t sure, the last time I got food poisoning.

I’ve just posted that on another post about guests staying too long and being able to post the same on two very different threads has pleased me immensely 😬

The whole point of smoking is to act as a preservative, so unless the salmon was going off when you put it in the fridge it will be fine.

Mum2jenny · 28/02/2024 21:37

I’d eat it

TwentyFirstCenturyOracle · 28/02/2024 21:42

No, I would eat it for 24 hours after it defrosted. Food poisoning from fish or seafood is very unpleasant. It would not be worth the risk for me.

😄😄😄😄

Cas112 · 28/02/2024 21:48

No I would only eat it within 24HRS of defrosting it

Friedchickenrocks · 28/02/2024 23:02

Yes. Once defrosted you treat it like fresh again and anything smoked keeps a long time.

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 28/02/2024 23:04

I've had smoked salmon a looooong way over its dates and all was fine. I'd definitely eat it.

AnnaMagnani · 28/02/2024 23:06

Smoked salmon yes, the whole point is the smoking preserves it.

It doesn't need to be treated like fresh.

ScreamingBeans · 29/02/2024 13:39

OK I ate it and am fine!

Thanks all
