Cranks bread discontinued?

I love Cranks wholemeal bread and buy it from my local supermarkets, but they haven't been stocking it recently. A friend has just told me that Cranks have discontinued it. Not sure if that's true, but if it is what a great pity. Does anyone have a recommendation for an alternative? I'm looking for a proper wholewheat bread with minimal ingredients and definitely no sugar added. I don't want sourdough or rye. I'm thinking that finally I'm going to have to make my own bread...

I've made the recipe and it worked out well, except that I think I didn't do the yeast properly. I used to make my own bread, but I can't remember what the yeast should look like when you've left it in warm water to 'fizz'. Does anyone know, should the whole bowl be fizzy, or does it just fizz on the surface and there's water underneath. I wonder if my water wasn't warm enough. Any tips welcome because, apart from the fact the bread didn't rise enough, it tasted just like the real thing!

Should be nicely frothy about 4” ( like the head of a Guinness ) on top of the liquid in the bottom

Agreed. I use a deep soup bowl already warmed and have the water warm above tepid, but not hot when I put my finger in it. I leave in a slightly warm oven for about 10 mins, not too hot or it kills the yeast.

I was sad about this as well. My Dad (87) absolutely loved this bread, and I used to take him a couple of loaves when I visited and he would freeze one. There no substitute that I can find.

I liked it too. You don't always want sourdough. Sometimes you just want thick, healthy wholemeal bread with lashings of butter and marmalade.

Cranks was my favourite. I was wondering why Waitrose never seemed to have it anymore.

I might have a go at making the recipe posted by @Pxrobbo (thanks!)

It's taken me months to realise Cranks was gone. First I couldn't find it in waitrose, then Sainsbury's. Just had the sense to Google, and came up with this thread.

Will be trying recipe.

Have now been making cranks bread from their 1982 recipe book for a few months. It’s a no knead easy recipe.(recipe posted earlier in this thread). I wanted to give some feedback as I have just added it into my routine and now just knock up a loaf twice a week. Water, salt, yeast, sugar, water. What’s not to like. Try it!!
