Figs

I have, after today’s shop, an impulse purchase of half a dozen fresh figs. What should I do with them?

Bake them with honey, goats cheese and walnuts.

Turn them into a salad, also with honey, goats cheese and walnuts.

Poach them in spices, sugar and red wine.

DO NOT eat them all in one go...

Slice, drizzle with vinaigrette and eat with Parma ham.

Chop up and add to a fruity Moroccan couscous to eat with lamb chops or roast lamb.

Slice into Greek yoghurt, add some honey, eat for breakfast.

Cut a X in the top, so you can open the fig (like a flower) drizzle with olive oil or add a dab of butter to each fig, pack into a small flat dish, bake for ten or fifteen minutes, eat with rare roast lamb or duck breast.

In a small frying pan, melt some butter, add honey or brown sugar and let it bubble gently, tip in sliced figs, stir and let it bubble briefly. Pour over vanilla ice cream and serve immediately. You can add a splash of nut liqueur to the warm figs if liked.

Lovely. And thanks for the not all at once reminder.

I think something involving goats cheese (which I happen to have) is in order.

I love figs, but always just snaffle them all raw. But these recipes look interesting, so will give them a try.

Blind bake a sheet of shortcrust pastry. Add a generous layer of chocolate ganache. Slice fresh figs over the top.

You could also make a savoury goat's cheese tart and top it with the figs.

They make an amazing topping for a flat bread pizza kind of thing. Make ( or buy) flat bread, spread with caramelised onion chutney they top with sliced figs, Gorgonzola and pancetta then bake. Remove from oven, drizzle with honey and scatter over a handful of rocket.

I love them on brown toast with crunchy peanut or almond butter

Savoury tart - filo base, chopped figs, top with whipped goats cheese or crumbled feta, drizzle with honey

Sweet tart- puff pastry base, chopped figs, frangipane topping
