DS has asked for a cake like this. I have no idea where to start. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Unless you have great modelling skills and all the equipment to do it, it will look crap. I'm professionally trained and have made cakes for years but I wouldn't much fancy making a model of that as I don't like figure modelling. You also need the right modelling paste, paste colours etc.

easiest option is to get a cake topper printed on etsy or if you have plenty of cash Zoe's Fancy Cakes is a great modeller, I think she does bespoke

there are YouTube modelling tutorials on modelling however you do need base skills to start with

Do it as a lying down whatever it is, might have to make a few cakes and cut out the body parts, stick together and ice in appropriate colours. If it's not perfect it doesn't matter, home made is best anyway.

Does it need the body? because if you only do the head you could start with a round and cut other bits for the ears. Then fondant for the eyes and piped icing for the ?hair.

Try to find colouring paste rather than the ordinary liquid food colouring (I still have flashbacks to 2 hours of trying to get the right blue for a Thomas cake, and that was 2002...).

Haha crikey!

Good luck OP, you're a better man than me for taking this on 🤣😄

I’ve opted out. Not taking it on and not a man.

I found a local professional cake decorator who used to make cake toppers for me and then I’d make and decorate the rest of the cake. She made dragons, Lego heads, a golden snitch.. and then I’d make and decorate the cake for it to sit on.
maybe worry messaging a few?

That’s a very good tip @GoingOverToTheDarkSide.

I’ve since negotiated a different cake.

Thank you for all for your helpful suggestions. I have agreed a different cake with DS as I’m really not up for this.

If he’s really lucky, we can mess around with some fondant together over half term but I’m hoping he’ll forget about it.

That’s the kind of cake you see at ‘cake international’ made by extremely talented cake makers.

Get him Collin the caterpillar from M&S 🤣
