Burns Night Dinner

Is anyone else doing a Burns Night Dinner tonight?

I'm doing Scottish smoked salmon pate with toast, haggis, potatoes etc, then for pudding scotch pancakes topped with raspberries, Scottish honey and cream.

Not completely a traditional menu, but I've simplified it a little to keep it easy to achieve. Have a great night everyone!

We're having haggis neeps and tatties . V filling. Kids probably have a Spanish omelette as they think haggis is yucky.
Have a lovely meal.

TheLadyIsAVamp · 25/01/2024 15:17

Sounds delicious! We're not as I forgot and can't get a decent haggis anywhere! Quite tempted to treat myself to a haggis supper from the chip shop though 😅

Gastropod · 25/01/2024 15:18

Not sure what we'll be having beyond the usual savoury fare this year, but a couple of years ago I made a cranachan cake and it was utterly delicious. I made a thin swiss roll type sponge, cut it into equal pieces and layered it up in a big cake tin with raspberries, honey/whisky cream and then raspberries and toasted oats on the top. Refrigerated and then removed from the tin to serve.

Haggis, neeps and tatties. Will supplement this with leeks and kale. Nice drop of Laphroaig on the side.

May have a piece of Dundee cake afterwards.

Schiehallion · 25/01/2024 15:43

Smoked salmon mousse parcels.
Haggis, neeps and tatties with whisky sauce.
Tipsy Laird (like sherry trifle).
Happy Burns Nicht, one and all!

AdaColeman · 25/01/2024 16:00

That all sounds delicious!

@Gastropod what a clever idea with your cake, I bet everyone loved it.

@Stressedgiraffe I was sure you were going to say the kids would have haggis omelette, you would have to call it Omelette Rabbie!

I once had what I think is called Balmoral chicken. It was delicious and I may make it with any leftover haggis. Chicken breast fillets stuffed with haggis, served with a whisky cream sauce. Mushrooms were probably involved somewhere.

We're having vegetarian haggis with broccoli and potatoes but don't have swede.

Will celeriac do or is it too similar to potato? It really needs using as we've just been given another from the veg box!

Whataretheodds · 25/01/2024 17:05

Celeriac will work. Have you got carrots?

xsquared · 25/01/2024 17:08

Yes, I've got carrots @Whataretheodds , thank you.

Mash them together?

lennylion · 25/01/2024 17:09

Yes! Delia's haggis, neeps and tattie pie. No whisky sauce as I'm sober. Bloody love haggis so am looking forward to it!

migigo · 25/01/2024 17:20

Ick, don't like haggis, but we have Scottish salmon, potatoes and (not so traditional) green beans, dp will have whiskey but not my bag. I just don't think swede and salmon go!

weegiemum · 25/01/2024 17:33

We're having haggis, tatties and neeps but I've not done anything else. We have a guest from Rwanda staying at the moment and he's never had haggis so it's going to be interesting!

Off to peel the neep, the hardest part of the proceedings!!

Whataretheodds · 25/01/2024 17:41

You could mash them together or do them side-by-side.

beetr00 · 25/01/2024 17:49

@weegiemum just top and tail and quarter, then microwave covered, with tbsp of water in container for ~10mins. Skin peels off easily then just mash 😊

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/01/2024 17:57

Shameful to admit perhaps but we are not. Both proud Scots, but can’t stand haggis (or neeps/turnip, come to that), so we just had a pizza, lol. I could eat a shed load of cranachan though…

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/01/2024 18:02

We're having haggis with ready made mash and swede from Tesco. DH is Scottish and working late so it's the ultimate microwave dinner. (We're in England).
I'm considered a philistine by DH because I like mine with tomato ketchup or barbecue sauce.

stargirl1701 · 25/01/2024 18:04

Haggis, neeps and tatties here. Veggie haggis for DD1.

GintyMcGinty · 25/01/2024 18:05

Haggis neeps and tatties plus cranachan is what we will have.

Tbh we often have haggis as a week day meal so it's just the Cranachan boujee-ing it up

Mama1980 · 25/01/2024 18:05

Veggie haggis, neeps and tattles here for us.
Then a raspberries, honey, whisky and cream mixture for dessert Smile

WontLetThoseRobotsDefeatMe · 25/01/2024 18:13

Haggis, neeps (spiced fritters) and tatties (mash) here with whisky sauce. Spare whisky for a wee drinkie.

Quick cranachan for pud. Maybe another whisky.

PicklesAndTequila · 25/01/2024 18:17

I found some haggis pakora lurking in the freezer, so I'm having that madras sauce and rice.

PicklesAndTequila · 25/01/2024 18:20

A bit late now, but for future reference, lob it whole into the slow cooker until it peels.

FannyFifer · 25/01/2024 18:22

Just had haggis, neeps & totties for tea here. Braw.

ILikeDungs · 25/01/2024 18:25

Doing dry January. DD and I have just discussed "cheating" for Burns Night and having a sip of whisky. She was pretty sure doing anything else would be an insult to Rabbie.
