Prompted by Delia, I actually bought some Aunt Bessie frozen mashed potato. It was OK - far too salty for out taste but OK. It was, however, seriously fab to be able to count out the discs, and microwave exactly the right amount and have it on the table in 5 minutes. So at the weekend, I did a huge pot of mash, sheped it into Aunt bessie sized discs and froze it. I now have in my freezer several bags of home made from scratch convenience food. I need a name for this Anti-Delia process!

gerruls! Hervens to Betsy! Swedes, Seeker, to my orfice thus minute!

Can you really freeze mash? I always thought they put some freakoid chemical in to make it possible. Seeker, have you actually tried to eat your discs? I remain sceptical till then.

BTW my life changed when I discovered that you can freeze bechamel for lasagne/fish pie/coll cheese. It's such a fuck to make - don't know why, but it makes my heart sink - but becomes more bearable when you know you're doing it for 3 meals0-worth of pinny pride.

thats a good idea i either end up with everyone getting half a scoop each or ten scoops eachnever a happy medium in my kitchen

The not enough mash to cover the shepherd's pie moment is a horrible one. My incompetence for all to see.

Swedes · 19/03/2008 22:20

amytheearwax - a scoop? That is so retro.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 19/03/2008 22:24

im a retro kinda girlwhat is it called these days?

onebatmother · 19/03/2008 22:27

ah yes, swedes, I know that shame.
lasagne with 2mm of other stuff between rigid pasta sheets is equally grim.

Love it! I was talking about doing this. Dh thought I was mad. Glad I'm not the only one.

Dh suggests "Aint Bessies".

About the shepherd's pie moment - would it make it better or worse to fill the voids with peas and say it was Turner Prize Pie.

Wouldn't it have to be pee rather than pea for the Turner Prize Committee to consider it.....
