Rotisserie chicken, chips and…????

Chelsea26 · 10/01/2024 12:37

Mum’s birthday meal this Saturday Evening. 15 people, some of them kids. We’re having chicken and chips and I’ve been tasked with salads/sides.

Already going to do a classic Caesar but would like some more ideas.

Preferably make ahead (some assembling is fine), don’t mind hot or cold.

Thank you

Corn on the cob for everyone!
Coleslaw

tootrueblue · 10/01/2024 12:40

Mixed salad including red onion, coleslaw

Brendabigbaps · 10/01/2024 12:40

Coleslaw
green salad
celery, apple and blue cheese salad
couscous salad

i wouldn’t want chips so hearty salads like couscous would be great

Potato salad, garlic bread if it's no problem to pop it into the oven, herbed peas (done last minute, only takes a couple of minutes), coleslaw.

DancingDangerously · 10/01/2024 12:41

Definitely agree on blue cheese, apple (or pear) and nut salad. But the fruit needs to be sliced last minute.

PossumintheHouse · 10/01/2024 12:42

Echoing corn on the cob and coleslaw. Could you also make a few dips/sauces for the chicken and chips? That would jazz it up a bit - a nice bbq, a garlic mayo, peri chicken dip?

HelpMeUnpickThis · 10/01/2024 12:45

Sweetcorn on the cob with a lime and butter mix brushed on just before serving

Sweetcorn salad - off the cob - add chopped chillI and coriander leaves

Coleslaw

Greek salad - feta olives red onion dark green leaves etc

Pickled cucumber and carrot salad

lentil (green) salad topped with goats cheese crumble and beetroot cubes

AutumnCrow · 10/01/2024 12:47

Green beans

(and slaw and cobs as pp have said)

TheFormidableMrsC · 10/01/2024 12:47

I would also do corn on the cob and coleslaw along with some jacket potatoes in case some don't want fries. Also a feta salad?

SgtJuneAckland · 10/01/2024 12:49

Peas with mint parsley and chilli, corn cobs with a flavoured butter of some kind, garlic and herb or lime etc
Plus your salad I like charred tenderstem too or shredded sprouts sauteed with garlic and spices but it depends how many you're cooking for because veg can go cold quickly

OooohAhhhh · 10/01/2024 12:52

Uw can I come it sounds lovely.
Feta cheese & black olive salad - with Aldi soy, ginger & chilli salad dressing - delicious!

Chelsea26 · 10/01/2024 12:52

Wow thank you, yes to coleslaw - might do a red cabbage/wintry version and love the sound of a kind of Waldorf (hold the blue cheese for almost everyone but me!) and corn cobs seem obligatory!

Little brother is on chicken and sauces for so that is taken care off.

Has anyone tried and tested a spinach/strawberry type salad? I often see them and they look lovely but have never actually tried one.

Also yes @Brendabigbaps (loving the name btw) I’m not keen on chips either so something hearty to replace will be good…

For me it would be:
Waldorf Salad
Coleslaw
Corn on the Cob
Potato Salad
Fresh crusty bread rolls

Cas112 · 10/01/2024 12:57

Corn on cobs always go down a treat

DancingDangerously · 10/01/2024 13:00

Wow thank you, yes to coleslaw - might do a red cabbage/wintry version

Definitely! A winter slaw is a wonderful thing.

PossumintheHouse · 10/01/2024 13:01

Ooh, I don’t think I’d go for spinach and strawberry if chicken and sauces are involved. Not sure that would make for a great combo.
The green bean and minted peas ideas by pp’s sound delicious.

Abra1t · 10/01/2024 13:01

If you're having chips I wouldn't go for a starchy salad.

I'd go for a really good, classic, green salad.
