Mandolin uses apart from potatoes and cucumber

A friend is having a kitchen clear out and has offered me a mandolin which she never uses. I’d mentioned at a pre- Christmas afternoon tea how I loved the thinly sliced cucumber, which is why she offered it to me first.

I’d use it also for making things like boulangere or dauphinoise potatoes. Not sure that is enough to justify taking jt as I am also trying to declutter.

If you have a mandolin, what else do you use it for?

Sweet potato crisps.
Matchstick apple to go in coleslaw

I use mine for fruit slices, my oven has a dehumidifier setting.
Also radishes for fancy salads.

Thank you so much for all the ideas, you've convinced me and I've collected it from my friend. It has a holder thing which you put on top of the veg, it's supposed to keep your fingers away from the blade. Will I still need to use gloves?

Mine has a holder. I don’t use gloves because my hand doesn’t go near the blade with the holder.

Yep, onions. Much quicker and far fewer tears. I'm religious about using the guard though, and always 'closing' the blade as soon as I've finished, so no accidents getting it out of the dishwasher.

I use mine loads! Love it.
Cabbage to make sauerkraut in big batches
Pink onions for home made pickled onions
Cabbage for coleslaw
Potatoes for hotpot
Etc etc

I brought my my mandoline out earlier today for a shaved sprout salad. It made quick work of slicing through all the sprouts (and apples).
