Is this turkey ok?

Due to a number of circumstances, I’m cooking Xmas dinner today. History is that I defrosted the turkey for 64 hours until 3am on 26th December. From then, I had 48 hours to cook it which would have been until 3am on 28th. So today should be fine. However, it’s halfway through being cooked and there is a green patch on it! Do you think it’s ok? It smells ok although I’ve smothered it in butter, nutmeg and red wine so maybe that’s masking it. Pic attached.

Is this turkey ok?

Nope! Definitely not with the green.

AlwaysForksAndMarbles · 27/12/2023 15:55

Nope, I’m afraid that’s not something you should be eating.

Apparently the green meat is actually safe but we had it one year on Christmas Day and got a refund and didn't eat it.

From google

The off-colour meat is thought to be caused by a degenerative muscle condition in turkeys commonly referred to as Green Muscle Disease, although it is not harmful. It occurs after the inner breast muscle of the bird develops in a way that prevents blood supply from circulating, resulting in the green discolouration.

I can't see where you mean, green could be lots of things, how green? Not always mould or gone off as such, could have been a bruise on the skin/flesh. A bad smell would have been the indicator so if it smelled ok I'd be fine with it.

Why not just say 'chef'! Celebrity means nothing, it's just someone poncing about in front of a camera!

Feliciacat · 27/12/2023 16:48

Thank you for the replies! The green patch went black and then disappeared. It smells lovely now and I do think it’s ok. I’ll report back tomorrow if I get food poisoning!

Only if he cooks me some pesto pasta and brings it to my bed

Feliciacat · 29/12/2023 00:16

Well, I may not have a celebrity chef DH but that’s ok because I can definitely cook for myself! Turkey was great and neither me nor DH have food poisoning. I think it must have been a bruise and I’m glad I persevered. Thank you for the advice anyway.
